On the news tonight, they used the phrase "Cannabis, a drug tens of thousands of people choose to smoke each week". I think they are seriously underestimating how widespread its use is. I wager everyone on here knows somebody who smokes it, I certainly do. Could decriminalizing the drug work in this country? There are huge benefits for the government in the way that it would free up a lot of police time, which could be used for catching those dealing/possessing harder drugs.
Is there any point whatsoever in downgrading the drug as they have done?
Do you have any views on the drug, or the questions I have asked above?

This is the cross section of society that people forget about, but who make up the majority of cannabis users. What the hell is wrong with spending an evening around a friends house, watching DVDs, playing computer games, having a smoke and a laugh with your mates? Nothing in my view - you're not harming anyone, or pushing it on anyone.
But they prefer instead to focus on all the bad points of smoking.
Like you say, drink has far more bad points than cannabis. People say cannabis leads onto harder drugs. This is most probably because the dealers who sell it also sell the harder drugs. If it was widely available and perfectly legal via coffee shops, most casual smokers would never come into contact with drug dealers ....

Its pretty much any chemical additive that stimulates the production of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the reward centre of the brain, if you eat chocolate and you like it, its stimulated, if you drink coffee and you like it, its stimulated, if you smoke dope and you like it, its stimulated. Naturally people wouldn't do it if they didn't like it. Its also why people can get addicted to various things from chocolate upwards, because when you do it, it makes you feel good ... a chemical reaction rather than a personality reaction.
Personally, get rid of fooking alcohol I say, would rather do without lary people on a Friday night, razzled and wanting to kick your head in. I think it would help reduce yob culture, which is the government's aim at the moment. This move with Cannabis is to reduce the need for the police to go around chasing after just about everyone who does it. All the students sat inside, cosy in the evenings, who sit there smoke away, discussing kung fu, no doubt gathered around Halo or Mario Kart, generally doing no harm to anyone. I'd rather they be let alone to do that and have the people who are out on the streets causing trouble fuelled by Stella cracked down on. Due to the legality of things, the smokers are seen as the 'bad guy'. No doubt you get smokers who are ABSOLUTE pains as there are drinkers who are quite lovely and charming, but you can't sweep the ENTIRE population under a stereotype anyway because of the nature of individuals. Well done on the Government I say, crack down on those doing harm and not on those who don't. I used to smoke, and what did I do with my time. Did I go out stabbing people, robbing houses to fuel my 'need'? No, I sat in mixing tunes and played through a multitude of Final Fantasy games. I'm a decent person, I'm friendly, I help those around me and try and contribute positively to life. I don't do it anymore, but I can't stand when an entire population gets dismissed under stereotypes thanks to the influence of media and press.
Anyway, I've rambled now, but I guess my key point is to treat people as individuals, not from what they do and how that is perceived, but from what they ARE.
