Well, it’s being talked about at the moment. My own personal views on the subject, as a non-smoker, are that it should not be.

Although I don’t smoke myself, who is it for me or anyone else for that matter to tell you that you can’t? On the practical side of things smoking injects a rather large sum of money into the country. Granted it will take quite a bit out, but I’d wager it’s not as much as it puts in.

There are some aspects of smoking that I don’t enjoy, the main one being the smokers that smoke in the designated non-smoking areas or intentionally blow their smoke into peoples faces, but this is fairly rare from my experiences.

Smoking is a habit, something that many smokers enjoy and do not want to give up. So why should they have to? Because it is bad for them?

They know the possible medical implications and as adults they should be able to make their own decision. Yes the nicotine in the cigarettes make it addictive, but there are plenty of other, possibly more dangerous drugs that are available and not being considered to be banned.

Alcohol for instance. I have never met a smoker that becomes more aggressive after a cigarette. Yet alcohol, which plays a part in rather a large amount of crime, is considered to be more acceptable.

Caffeine. I don’t know if any of you know anything about true caffeine addicts, but it is truly one of the worst and most health threatening addictions you can have. Heart problems, severe shaking and aggression all play a part.

I could go on, but can’t see the point. What are all your views on this?

Oh please, the only thing that will change the way people think to that extent is mass lobotomy.

Face it, people are stupid. How else can you justify people buying cigarettes despite huge warnings written on the packet in fat letters telling you that they will kill you?

What do you do with stupid people that can't be trusted to make decisions?

That's right, you make the decision for them.

In public places? Absolutely.

We hear about freedom of choice, and that's all well and good. But if I'm in public and someone is smoking, they are taking away MY choice not to breathe smoke. My choice isn't harming anyone. Their choice is.

If they want to pollute their lungs and make their own clothes stink, that's fine, but why should the rest of us put up with it?

No doubt some smoker will say "just move", and if I can, I will - but that isn't always an option.

Having said all that, I've been a passive smoker for most of my life. I had asthma as a kid because of my parents smoking, and our house has always reeked of it - even the coats hanging up in the hall.

Smokers are among the most selfish people on the planet. My mum now has COPD because of her smoking; it's a progressive disease that will get worse over time, and if she has another ciggie it could kill her. She could really do without breathing any more smoke. Yet my dad - who supposedly loves her - still smokes heavily and will not even TRY to give up. How selfish is that?

How could you say that it shouldn't be your choice, you can't not make it someone's choice what to do with your body. The only way to make sure people don't end up becoming pot heads or exttreme drug addicts is to teach them at a younger age. A guy at my school was expelled for taking cannabis and being caught 2 times. The reason? I think it was because we were't taught about it at a yooung age. He started doing it at 11 to 12 I think. I think that people should be educated from an early age to ensure they don't take drugs. Although if they illegalise smoking, they're will be drastic consequences.

I've not smoked for 4 days. Yesterday was hard though. I recall wandering into a shop fingering a fiver. I recall approaching the counter. I recall the bald man behind the till saying, "Yes?" I recall turning on a sixpiece and the tinkle of the door bell as I departed empty-handed.

The flesh is weak but the will is strong.

I don't. I drink and smoke because I enjoy it.

I know it's your choice what you do with your body. What I'm saying is that it shouldn;t be.

Easily. I did it all day yesterday.

All smokers know the risks involved, but do it anyway. I also had eight pints of lager (which is nearly as bad as nicotine) all day yesterday topped off with an evilly hot curry. I knew I'd pay this morning but have so far been tiptop.

It’s our choice what we do to our bodies.

I agree that smoking should be banned in public places though. I'll be in a restaurant with friends and go outside if I fancy a smoke, no matter what the weather. If I’m in a no smoking area in a pub, I’ll go to the smoking area.

I really do hate the "let people make up their own mind" argument. Left to their own devices, people pump themselves full of drugs, fats and other nonsensical crap that slowly debilitates them, rots their internal organs, kills off their brain or simply kills them slowly. What does that tell me? It tells me that people are too stupid to be allowed to make their own decisions in such matters.

Seriously, how can you take a packet of cigarettes out of your pocket, see the huge unmissable "SMOKING KILLS YOU" sign on the front, take one out and start smoking it?

It's red button syndrome, I'm convinced of it. Tell people not to do something for their own good, and they're more likely to do it simply to defy you.

If people want to live and act like gormless lemmings, then I think they should be treated as such.
