Well, it’s being talked about at the moment. My own personal views on the subject, as a non-smoker, are that it should not be.

Although I don’t smoke myself, who is it for me or anyone else for that matter to tell you that you can’t? On the practical side of things smoking injects a rather large sum of money into the country. Granted it will take quite a bit out, but I’d wager it’s not as much as it puts in.

There are some aspects of smoking that I don’t enjoy, the main one being the smokers that smoke in the designated non-smoking areas or intentionally blow their smoke into peoples faces, but this is fairly rare from my experiences.

Smoking is a habit, something that many smokers enjoy and do not want to give up. So why should they have to? Because it is bad for them?

They know the possible medical implications and as adults they should be able to make their own decision. Yes the nicotine in the cigarettes make it addictive, but there are plenty of other, possibly more dangerous drugs that are available and not being considered to be banned.

Alcohol for instance. I have never met a smoker that becomes more aggressive after a cigarette. Yet alcohol, which plays a part in rather a large amount of crime, is considered to be more acceptable.

Caffeine. I don’t know if any of you know anything about true caffeine addicts, but it is truly one of the worst and most health threatening addictions you can have. Heart problems, severe shaking and aggression all play a part.

I could go on, but can’t see the point. What are all your views on this?

Actually it almost literally says that. I saw on a Tobacco packet: ''smoking causes slow and painful death''. Nice.

Even though I'm a non-smoker, I think it'd be ridiculous to ban smoking now. Why? A little thing called freedom of choice.

To all the non-smokers out there worried about passive smoking - have you actually tried asking the person who is polluting your lungs to put their cigarette out? Because, y'know, I think if they knew you were bothered by it then they'd probably agree. There is a very small percentage of people out there who purposely smoke in a crowded area of people who do not - these are called idiots, and they'd exist whether smoking was banned or not.

And if you're so hung up on the whole 'saving thousands of lives' aspect of it, then why not ban alcohol as well? Surely that'd be a much better alternative? They say that around 1,000 people a year die from passive smoking? Well, I wonder how many people die each year from drink-driving accidents, drunken fights, alcohol-related crime etc? More than 1,000, I'd say. So why aren't people calling for alcohol to be banned?

Because it's freedom of choice. I don't want people telling me what's good and bad for me, because I'll make my own mind up - I'm an adult. If you have to do something, then make more designated smoking/no smoking areas, raise the legal age for the purchase of cigarettes and actively fine people who break these laws.

Well the first step is admitting it. The second is getting a cheesy round of applause.

I've gone over 72 without a cig now and I feel like a vampire in need of a feed. My body is saying to me over and over: "Hey, where is that smoky nicotine stuff?"
I can see the lights of the newsagents from my window... they are beckoning me with an angelic curled-finger: "come hither, come hither."

*puts head in hands*

So who am I this morning?
Nothing but a drug addict in need of his drug.

Ok, so maybe Black Glove *will* stick to it.. ;)

But people might move onto alcohol or something in need of calming down. Cannibis will probably get smoked a whole lot more. Unless they ban Rizlas too! You never know. This will go on for a long, long time!

I wanna hear Goatboy!

It probably won't be banned. If it was, people won't stick to it. How can they? Having a fag, for some people, is like needing air.

Just like that banning of smoking in public. What happened to that? 5 or 6 months ago? Haven't heard any more of it.

I don't think it should be banned.

Personally i think they government should stop spending so much money on anti-smoking advertising.

when people are still buying the things when it quite blatently says on the packet "this will kill you" (okay, not to that extent but similar) why bloody bother?

It's partial lies. Cigarettes cause cancer in some smokers but not in all. The statistics don't record how many people have smoked their whole lives and been none the worse for it.

I'm a non smoker, however I don,t think it should be banned

Smoking is dirty, smelly, bad for you and bad for those around you, however banning smoking would be totally unenforceable and I could envisage a society like prohibition in 1920's America, people driven to smoke bootleg and more likely than not even more unsafe ciggarettes there would be a thriving blackmarket which would stop police targeting proper crime

What each individual does is up to them, smoking should however be banned in public places. Many a time i've been next to someone who is smoking in a non-smoking area and when asked to move they just blow smoke in the face of the person asking.

Today also I could not eat my tea at home as my brother had been out for a fag and when he sat next to me the smell was all in my food and there was a horrible taste in my mouth. His reply when I told him - "Cigarettes give you cancer"? "Thats all lies"
