Just something my brother pointed out to me yesterday, that was so obvious I missed it.
So the machines are farming humans for the energy right?
Ok, Neo and Trinity fly above the cloud layer, and its bright and sunny.
Are the machines so naff that they can't build structures above this cloud layer and use solar energy? I mean, Its only a couple of 100 feet from the ground.

a few hundred feet? It's significantly higher than that.
Besides, it's likely far easier to gather energy on the ground. Collecting solar energy would require continuously sending something to fly up, gather solar energy and come down again. Likely consuming much of the stored energy in the process.
So why bother with such an inefficient method when they can sit around sucking up human energy, which can be provided 24 hours a day and doesn't require a wasteful gathering process.

In revolutions when neo and trinity fly up through to the sun, the machines cant handle it, therefore machines can't get that high in order to build what ever you guys are talking about.
