I *liked* it! Remember this for future reference Goatboy et al. You can add it to the list of Robert Rankin, Final Fantasy VII and Led Zeppelin.

Anyway, for some reason they decided to show the film today a few weeks after release. And it was on the premier screen. Which is r0x0ring to say the least. The seats are actually normal, non-folding ones, and there was more legroom than a normal screen when the seats are folded. And the drinks holders were better. And there was a little table on the end of each row. And it was really small, and two tiered. And there were three people in there, one being the person I went with. And and and...

The film was excellent, but completely bonkers and a lot....most of it didn't make sense, but to be honest it wouldn't be a good anime if it did. And if that's not enough it's got Tara Strong, voice of Rikku in FFX, the guy who did Colonel Campbell in MGS (who more than likely has a name, but if he has I can't remember it), and John Ratzenberger, Cliff in Cheers and seems to have been in most Pixar films, all voice acting. Yep. So watch it. And not as in "so watch it or I'll duff you up".

How is it blinkered?
Every single one of the 20-odd anime films I've been shown have not interested me.
You suggest I watch each and every anime film, knowing I don't enjoy them, in case I see one I might?
That's retarded.
Anime is a genre, the same as horror/romantic comedy/action.
Or, if not, then what would you describe anime as if not a genre?

I dont like anime, based on the films I have seen so far ranging from the usual dragons raping schoolgirls through to more family orientated ones.
The Animatrix, I downloaded those and just thought "Oh for f...." and couldn't get into them.

Anime + Goatboy = Boredom.
If I said "all anime is crap" then maybe you would have an argument, but one person saying "I dont enjoy them" is simply that - a person expressing his like/dislike for a chosen genre of film.

Nope. I don't feel anime is another genre of film to be lumped alongside romantic comedies, sci-fi or action movies, they are an entire thing unto themselves in my (albeit slightly bias) book.

Saying "Anime makes me bored the moment it starts" just shows a highly blinkered view of something. If you had of said "Akira made me bored" or "Ghost in the Shell made me bored" then it would show you didn't like those certain films.
But, like my dad, you dismissed the enitre anime thing (a truly massive industry) just like that.

Of course you can watch and enjoy what you like, I wouldn't demand that you go and see Spirited Away or any other title you wouldn't enjoy, but you have to understand that anime is a pretty big thing, with as many sub-categories as live action film, so dismissing all anime because you've seen a few films you didn't like seems wrong to me.

Having said all that, you should still see Spirited Away, though I have a slight suspicion that it wouldn't be your cup of tea.

But you said you find them boring, that can be changed by saying "this film isn't".

No it's not.
That's like saying "Mariah Carey doesn't do it for me" or "Romantic Comedies" don't do it for me or "Black Sabbath leaves me cold".
It's a style of music/film that I don't like for whatever reason.
A genre that offers nothing of interest to me, therefore I choose not to watch it. I would no more watch Spirited Away than I would watch "The Sound of Music".
Why? Because I don't like musicals. Just as I don't like anime.

I just don't like anime and no amount of "But this one is good" will change my mind, deal with it.

But that's like saying "films don't do it for me" or "music doesn't do it for me".
There are so many different types of anime series/films that you can't really shun the entire genre just because you've seen a few rubbish things or things you didn't enjoy.

I think anime is something you either love or hate really. I can't really remember why I got so interested in it, it was probably because I loved all the old 80's cartoons, and wanted to keep seeing animated stuff, and anime just had that appeal. There's so much creativity, energy and originality that it just sucked me in.
I've seen plenty of rubbish over the years, stuff that would put off any prospective fan, but also some great stuff.

Do you remember the kind of things you've seen?

But I don't say it's crap, I say I don't enjoy it.

I've tried watching it time and time again, with a mate that is obsessed with it and I just think "I don't care, I really don't care" and end up reading a magazine until he turns it off.
I just don't enjoy it, it doesn't work for me.

But your old mucker Quentin Tarantino loves it.

I think the reason why modern anime would never totally catch on in this country is what has gone before. We've had the ultra violent nature of it shown off with early UK releases like Akira and Ninja Scroll etc, those early releases set the standard of people's expectations, shoe-horning the entire genre into the sort of underground culture we see today by marketing itself rather poorly, despite there being many accesible titles available too.
Then we had the Pokemon craze, where all anime was seen as this kind of hyperactive junk brainwashing children and giving them convulsions because it's so crazy.

My dad doesn't like anime either, but he tends to group the entire industry in one specific thing: "just cartoons".
To the untrained eye, they are cartoons. Many of them have nothing to say, many are crazy or highly sensationalist, but there are also some amazing things out there, things with real stories, characters, amazing action or deep meanings.

They have as much merit as any normal films, they just happen to be animated. That's what I tell my dad, but he doesn't seem to care. He doesn't care for martial arts films either.

I wouldn't push someone to begin taking an interest in anime, but if they were only to try the better examples of the genre, they might think "hey, this old crap is actually pretty good."

I can't. I just can't.
Anime makes me bored the moment it starts, I just don't like cartoons anymore.
It may be well written, it may interesting but anime/manga/japanimation just bores me stupid no matter how much I try and kid myself otherwise.

The US dvd has been out for some considerable time now, and is most likely fairly cheap from various places (provided you have a multi-region player that is).

Excellent film.
