It may seem quite controversial to argue against animal rights but I have a raging feminist girl in my college class who argues about absolutely everything and she has pushed me to the psychological limit and provoked a bit of deep thinking on my part.

Since the dinosaurs perished and mankind became the dominant species on Earth, we have remained unchallenged. Well over 2000 years have gone by and we haven’t had a challenge to our power, a single species (namely us) has pretty much unlimited power. People talk about how intelligent dolphins and dogs are and how they are almost as clever as humans and even show human traits so should be treated equally. A few hundred years ago before the slave trade was abolished, black people were treated worse than animals despite the fact that they were in fact human.

Before the world decides to give animals all these special rights I think we need to sort out human rights before. Racial hatred is at an all time high and before animals start getting treated the same as humans, other humans need to start respecting each other and treat each other as equals.

If animals are smart enough to understand they aren’t treated equally then why don’t they go ahead and do something about it? Why, because they aren’t that smart. I am against animal cruelty for sure, I love animals and hate so see battery farming, fox hunting and animal testing going ahead but we need to develop a perspective. Our fellow man is more important than any animals. No matter how much you love your little pet hamster, a human life is more valuable.

I’m interested to listen to your views on the matter, so go on, discuss.

Sagacious may be at the bottom of the food chain if he were at the bottom of the sea, but a shark would be as useless as baby if it were to find itself in London.
That's a silly argument.

Lucky enough? It's compulsory.

I often wish I weren't.

I wouldn't like the job of explaining human history to some aliens. Assuming they had eyes, I wouldn't be able to make eye contact.

Being intellectually superior doesn't make you better.

You have more "intellectual potential" than, say, a fish. So what? Fish don't care. Under water, humans are at the bottom of the food chain.

You even said yourself "in your environment" you're superior. In other's you're not. So get off you're little high horse and realise that humans are not as special as they like to think.

I'd still find time to pop into a library and read up on things. In any case I bet I'd still have more intellectual power than sheep or cows. Anyway, I wasn't abandoned at a young age, and due to our society I've been lucky enough to receive an education and protection from RAF base snipers. In my environment I'd say thay I've been successfull.

Every animal's behaviour and intellect is determined by it's genetics and therefore their predecessors. Thus a Shark is only able to rip a Seal in shreds due to evolution and the fact that Sharks became such successfull predators (and at times scavengers). As Man has the potential to become "intellectual" that sets us apart from the other species.

I bet I'd have more chance of figuring out how to than a Chimpanzee or a Donkey. In truth I reckon I could learn to drive a Tank in an hour or so: they are designed to be easy to manouvere and if one can get use to the indpendance of the tracks (the steering in effect) I'd have a good chance of ramming the Croc into oblivion. I could probably use the mounted machine gun too.

My job involves ensuring that Government impacts do not adversely effect Biodiversity. I also encourage the creation/development of biodiveristy across our estate. In effect I am protecting and also creating places for them to live. Animals don't provide habitats for humans to live in. Thus in theoretcial terms, I am superior.

Intellectually superior?

Tell me this, if you had been abandoned at a young age and made to live in the wild, how intellectual would you be?

You're only "intellectual" because of those that have been before you. YOU are nothing. You walk upright and speak english because that's what you've been taught to do. If no-ne had been there to do that, you'd be on the same level as everything else.

History, then, sets us apart, and it doesn't take a genius to see that our history is hardly littered with outstanding intellectual prowess.

As for your point about facing a crocodile in a tank, do you know how to work one? Do you even know when you'd need it? Do you know when you're being hunted? I'm guessing not. Because for all your intellect, your superiority, you can't utilise the tools that set you apart effectively enough on your own, and you're still at the mercy of nature in such a situation.

I do wish people would stop taking credit for a supposed superiority which isn't theirs. You haven't achieved anything to set yourself above animals.

So a Monkey can use a stick to collect Termites with. Big deal. Their contribution to the world is negligible, in respects to the advancement of tool technology.

Superior? When so many creatures of nature can best
> us so easily? Don;t you believe it.

It depends on how you define a fair fight. I'd never survive more than a minute fighting a Nile Crocodile with my bare hands but in a Tank I'd fancy my chances. We could best every animal on this planet if we wanted to.

> If you ask me, most animals are far far superior to humans. A shark

A bit of a trite arguement; a shark will never sleep with your wife either, or talk about you behind your back. Because it is a fish and lives in the sea and has evolved to be a fearsome predator, with little scope for social interaction (apart from swimming around with other sharks).

> You want an example of how humans are worse than pretty much all

Male Rats rape other male Rats in order to infect them with a virus that makes the recipient Rat infertile. Chimps and Dolphins have been known to perform rape; this is due to their intelligence. In fact the more intelligent the animal, the more prone it is to rape. Other animals act of instinct, these animals have enough reasoning to perform base acts, like murder and betrayal.

Yeah, however: in order to have mating rites almost every animal fights with others in its species, to become the alpha male. I don't fight with other blokes down the pub every time I want to pull a lady (though women often cause many many fights, it has to be said).

I am intellectually superior to every single non-human animal on the planet.
