In some American cities you can get the Anime Channel on cable - they have tons of stuff on - Noir, Excel Saga, basically everything ADV has in it's big box of anime licences !

Magazine wise, even the US only has around 3 - Newtype, Raijin/Gaijin, and Amerimanga. We may have cross stitching magazines but the sad fact is people will buy them, more than would an anime magazine. To be honest, I'd carry on with Newtype USA unless they ever bring out Newtype UK, 'cause its ace. Whilst it is import only, there is no VAT on it, and there are plenty of people selling it online and by mail order.

It seems a lot of things happened in the industry well before people were ready for it. Pioneer, Manga Entertainment, the magazines, that's the annoying thing, that now the market is ready to grow and there isn't really anything pushing. That's the one thing that we have now that we didn't have then, a hell of a lot of anime on TV and 10,000s of potential fans who think "you know this isn't half bad". For example TokyoPop really pushed manga in America, god knows what they're trying to do with the UK. You have atleast 5 magazines on cross-stitching in the UK and no Anime magazine only a decent, but expensive Newtype that you have to import.

One thing that is happening is that CNX is being replaced with Toonami and will be back in the Kids section on Sky Digital. From what people have said they are going to focus on mature american cartoons like xmen evolution as well as anime. They will still show animes like Cowboy Bebop while they still hold it, but they would like to own Evangelion aswell. Hopefully we'll see a lot of animes that are on Cartoon Network in American. Inu Yasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, Big O, Kenshin etc. I think they're going for a teen boy audience here. But I wouldn't expect them to suddenly buy up a lot of programming. It'll probably happen gradually.

A good summing up there Bell.
Generally I don’t feel anime was marketed too well here back when Manga were in their heyday. It was appealing too much on the geeky sci-fi/gore/violence sensationalist factors and not to a broad enough range of viewer, which is where it found it’s niche and hasn’t really failed to rid itself of that image.
The amount and range of stuff being released here is slowly improving, and hopefully Spirited Away will get the good attention it deserves and isn’t just wrongfully labelled a Disney-esque clone. The Cowboy Bebop film is scheduled for a dvd release at some stage, though I hope someone sees fit to release the series before it.
There’s still not as much stuff being released here as I’d like (Lupin, Patlabor, Ghibli stuff (which is coming soon), and more up to date releases of things from the US) but it’s better than it has been.

It’s just a shame that in this country, Japanese anime has a stereotypical image, and it’s something it’s stuck with.

In terms of non-clichéd anime (i.e things without big robots, girls with big eyes, sex-mad demons etc) I like nothing better than Cowboy Bebop. My brother watched the series with one of his mates (who I don’t think usually watches much anime) and he liked it.
It’s the kind of show that has a very universal atmosphere, so doesn’t tend to be too over-reliant on Japanese cultural knowledge, so can appeal to just about anyone, anime fanboy or not, and that's why it has been successful in America.
It has great characters, a great blend of storylines, wonderful artwork and style, amazing music and a highly cool feel to it.

As for Wonderful Days, I saw the trailer for it some months back, and it looks pretty cool. I’m sure some distributor will pick up the rights to release it on dvd in America one day. Strangely, much like cat pie, it is a Korean production I think.

Newtype USA covers the UK, only available on import though, and costs around 7-9 an issue - each comes with a DVD sampler, postcards and poster. If you can get hold of it it's a great read. If you give www.page45.com an email they can supply it to you on a regular basis - anyone in Nottingham should pay them a visit because they have tons of Anime stuff, along with Travelling Man on top of Gamestation.

kittworld, back around (I think) the early 90's Manga Entertainment really went mad on promotion - they heavily pushed Dominion Tank Police and Patlabor, along with AD Police and Cyber City OEDO, and they had a a magazine - Manga Mania, and all across the UK small independent retailers sprang up. At one point even GAME promoted Patlabor, giving away a massive poster, and Woolworth had a Manga promotion with token collect promotions.

So, where are the retailers and where is the magazine ? The bubble burst - most of the new retailers had bought in great stock, but there was not enough fans to buy it. Manga Mania folded within a couple of years also, and at one point Manga Entertainment were in such dire financial straits that they were barely releasing anything.

Thankfully times have changed for the better, but what happened back then is probably why people like MVM are weary of going overboard on advertising, and why Manga Entertainment is only just trying out new licenses rather than rereleasing old titles.

Was going to comment on what Tiltawhirl was talking about, but suffice to say he's exagerating, if you actually look at the official anime available here and in the US very little of it is pornographic, in the UK the only ones I know of are the Darkness Trilogy, and only Virgin, Amazon and Play.com stock them. I've actually seen one, Alien Of Darkness, and it's no worse than the standard 18 rated film, and the content cannot save it from being a rather crap film anyway.

To me, genuine Anime fans are about characters and storyline and art, those who get off on the more perverted stuff are not representative of the industry or the fans, and it's most likely these people watch stuff like Hentai because of the portrayal of scenes far beyond real life porn from what I've heard on the net.

I like Mechs, I like robots whacking each other, and I think it makes a great change to have female leads for a change, far more interesting as people and if Tiltawhirl looked beyond the cover art he'd find most shows have a dual male lead as well - Love Hina has Keitaro, and that professor guy. More to the point, to me the males in anime seem more believable, for the most part, than the macho moron image in most western films and shows. Kare Kano, Ah My Goddess, Chobits, all have dual male/female roles. I see more to respect and aspire to in most female anime characters than I do in most real life supposed celebrities. So Anime characters are not real, but neither are celebrities or sports stars, they just project an image for their fans, most of whom only like them because they fancy them.

Give me Anime anyday.

BTW Anyone know anything about a film called Wonderful Days ? Premiered in North Korea (!) a month back, Newtype USA covered it a while back but nothing since then.

That was a poorly done post by me. Should have gone something like this.

Do you have any news on this or not? It's about time the U.K got an anime/manga magazine.

Where did I say all Anime was cartoon porn, you love jumping to conclusions don't you?

I used to love Anime when I was younger, had about 50 video's and shag loads of Manga. Can't say I watch it anymore, not my type of thing.

But the majority of Anime I've seen everyone has stupidly large eyes, insane facial expressions, at least some form of big robot or 'mech' , lots and lots of school girls that tend to be magical or know some kind of martial art, cartoon sex that for some weird reason often contains tentacles or something else probing a girls never regions and many other strange things.

The Japs have issues. I'm not saying all Anime is like this, but you watch some of the Asian films I've seen and you'd agree with me that they have some serious issues.

I would just rather something popular like Love Hina was saved for a much larger company. From what I've been hearing there are a few more companies on the way so it's not going to be just MVM, ADV and Manga.

The industry has changed a lot since 1996 when I got involved. The idea of one series being played on 3 different channels, Eva being shown as saturday morning television, Dragonball Z playing through the day back to back, over 15 different anime series shown in 1 day across a number of channels, this would have all been seen as impossible and would never happen. I hold high hopes for the future of anime and manga in the UK. 2004 should see the first anime convention reach 1000 members. With a new anime magazine who knows what will happen.

Going to the few conventions there are over here never bothers me, I just like to watch the shows and buy the merchandise and stuff, I've found being a fan of something too much ultimately means less enjoyment of it - hence I don't trawl the net for news on anime all that much, just buy what I see.
