Saw this brough up in another thread. Out of respect for that thread (if you know which one you'll understand) I've put the topic here instead.

What troubles me about 9/11 is that if it had happened to some financial building in Africa. The coverage wouldn't have been anything like it was.
i have summed it up to people before and they have agreed that it been considered an even worse crime because:

A bunch of rich, white Americans died.

They are somehow more important than other people in the world.
This sickens me and lessens my sympathy for America.

Obviously I'm generalising but I think my point is clear.

That may be true but it didn't happen in a third world country it happened in America and it was the ease of being able to see the coverage so quickly that made it so shocking. You probably wouldn't have been able to get the same coverage from Africa but I don't believe the tradegy would have been any less shocking or easier to forget.

Rich? Who said they were rich? I was under the impression that most of them were ordinary people just doing a days work to earn a living as you or I would.

Lastly - it wasn't only Americans that died!

I know I was going to state something else but it has deserted me for the time being.

Exactly. Sad but true.

Indeed. I hang around on irc with a lot of US peeps that are generally pretty normal, but on that particular day they just transmuted into this rabid bunch of flag-waving t*ssers, intent on deploying their infinite military throughout the known Universe as if their armed forces answered personally to them. I generally have adverse reactions to whenever I perceive the media to be overblowing a story - I couldn't care less about Diana dying, yet no-one else seems to remember Mother Teresa passing away the same week, and while September 11th was shocking it was only of the sight of an actual passenger jet crashing into a world landmark, both packed full of people, is not something you see every day. I got kick-banned from a number of channels for suggesting it was good TV - while this stance is pretty insensitive, thousands of people die in tragedies every day, most are forgotten. It was only because this was an American plane flown into an American landmark on American soil that it was such a big deal. I mean, who cares about 800,000 Rwandans getting massacred - they're Rwandans ffs!!

Hey it's the way the world works. Seriously if it had been a third world country and a lot of rich, influential people hadn't died: there wouldn't have been anywhere near as much of an outcry.

Sad but true.

Its funny you talk about respect and then demonstrate a total lack of it in dealing with such a topic.
