However, that said, it still didn't 'do anything' for me, I mean it was a basic racer that wouldn't look out of place on a PS1. I guess that realistic racing games just don't fare that well with the DS, a trend Nintendo seem to uphold with every console, though I do like Asphalt.
I'm happy with the other games I have on DS though, so it's not going to be disappearing anytime soon...
I dont think the DS is as revolutionary as they made out.
There is only so much you can do with the touch screen, using it to steer is an awful idea, I wouldn't use it is an analog pad in Mario for fear of damage as I can get quite heavy handed in the heat of the moment, and I fail to see the novelty releasing remakes of remakes, if I wanted to play a 8 bit missile game i'd have brought a NES, and pac pix? I know there are some die hard fans out there but really...
now FPS thats another thing entirely, brilliant control for Metroid Prime, but they will never give us what we really want (goldeneye or Perfect dark) just rehashes of frankly disgraceful games like rogue agent.
Our local game store has seen about 3 new titles since the launch debute, I've enjoyed nintendo and their games for years, but now they just don't cut it for me anymore :'-(
Though I do hope Nintendo prove me wrong.
And the GBA micro will dampen Sony's launch party.
The DS has a very strong competitor, and I can see it appealing heavily to the UK market because of its 'cool' facor, and its ability to play DVD's, better graphics, blah blah. However, the DS is selling very well in all regions, and I'm sure Nintendo will bundle it well with strong advertising ontop, too.
The DS has SO much more to look forward to aswell, despite its poor launch. Although PSP's launch is strong, there has been nothing incredible in the pipe-line in my opinion after that. Ha.
They are a little pricey but they are enjoyable and different.
Anyway, it also shows Nintendo in fighting mood.
PSP announced to debunk the GBASP.
Nintendo release prototype system to counter-act the launch and shake Sony's PSP.
In Japan the Sony PSP is destroyed.
In America the DS has a large head start but the PSP is catching. Although there have been few games released on the DS unlike Japan.
In Europe Nintendo continue to dominate with two systems with the PSP no-where in sight.
Sony are facing a two pronged Nintendo attack to prevent their system from taking off.
Christmas is a time where Sony hope to swing it. They believe their gorgeous titles will defeat the likes of Metroid and Mario Kart... and Nintendogs outside of Japan.
Nintendo, not likeing the new threat to the handheld market unleash a third pronged attack. Although essentially the GBA pocket, Micro will appeal to a whole new batch of people. Those who want to play pure handheld play AND those just interested in something a little stylish.
Even if it is too small.
The GBA has been the suprise of the handheld war. Not only is it holding on but it is doing VERY well. In Japan it occasionally outsells the PSP.
The handheld market, this year, has grown by 140%... Nintendo are laughing all the way to the bank.
But the worry? The PSP is gaining hype in Europe and even in Japan, where is it consistantly losing to the DS and sometimes the GBA SP, it is selling remarkably well.
Although it is below expectations in America.
> I dont see the DS creating that solid
> look that most games on the N64 had.
It's just because the graphics on the DS are a lot sharper. On the N64 every game was antialiased into next century to remove the jaggies, which is why most games were so fuzzy (Go and play Perfect Dark and marvel at how you ever actually saw ANYTHING in the distance). Without the AA, textures on the DS aren't blurred, so maybe that's why they seem less 'solid'.
> Mario Kart shall rock but I wonder how many will be playing online
> since it's wi-fi only...
Apparently Ninty are releasing a PC Dongle, so even if your computer isnt Wi-fi'd then you can still play it. Apparently...
In terms of arcade racers Mario Kart has always been the daddy when it comes to fun, even the Cube version was better than most racers out there.
I've always thought Mario Kart was a little bit limited for my liking. There seems to be the same old tracks on every single format (N64, Cube, GBA etc) and you always have the same characters. That just bores me.
However, I did hear Ninty are making 15 more new tracks plus the old ones so maybe the DS version will be a little bit more interesting. But the rest of the game will probably stay the same.
