Someone came in to Gamestation with a PS Vita today. Import, obviously, but I hate to think how much the thing cost.

Very nice, too, but after the issue with the TV I'm not looking at buying anything for a while. Besides, games to finish still and I've promised myself that I'll be good and pay off credit cards and stuff this year.

If she does decide to set things up let us know. I'm sure between us we have a few potential leads.

Also if maternity was set up, I am fairly sure (70%) that redundancy can't be applied. Or if it can, it's going to be very easy to counter/argue.

What court (if it goes to court, but for sake or the point it is!!) in England is going to say "So you made this woman redundant 3-4 weeks before she is due to go on maternity leave? Yeah ok, seems legit"??

Thanks again all for your support and suggestions. Don't quote me on this but, it appears the 'business' is slack and redundancies are necessary, how many this involves I'm not sure. When she started, early last year, there was no sign of pregnancy, but when it was confirmed the male Office Manager was not a happy bunny and seems to have been totally off her ever since - apparently. So there could be something here. However, her female supervisor has been extremely supportive and will be with her for this afternoon's meeting.

As for 'maternity leave' - that had been organised I believe but with no support from the Company.

Daughter-in-law is a very accomplished amateur photographer, who has got a good reputation here for what she does. The idea was always to develop this 'hobby' into a full-time job after the baby was born and so provide another income - it just cannot be done at present, it needed to be long-term and well-planned. A Facebook public account has been extremely successful and displays her talent well and a website is now in development.

The short-term is the problem, so the meeting needs to be dealt with first.

Thanks DL xx

Had she applied for her maternity leave already? With 14 weeks I can't imagine she was that far off of it.

And as Hmmm... said, there is definately room for 'making a scene'. Obviously nicely and without issue, but you know what I mean.

@Garin, yeah could be that I suppose although I have tried streaming Eurosport HD on to my plasma by connecting it to my laptop and that wasn't brilliant either. That seems to stream at about 2.5Mbs on my connection (compare that to DVD which is about 6Mbs and Blu Ray around the 25-30Mbs mark) so I'm presuming the bitrate on these kind of feeds is probably too low for displaying on screens of this size? Eurosport HD looks ace on the laptop though so I tend to watch it on that.

@DL, hope there's some kind of positive news from your daughter in laws meeting today. If her actual leaving date is not imminent (as in this week) then perhaps she can work out something with them to tide her over until the little person arrives in a few months time?, then she can look for something new later on in the year. When we found out our daughter was due a few years ago it was total shock as we were both definitely younger than we would have chosen to become parents, still living with parents etc. Seemed like the end of the world at the time but it all worked out in the end as I'm sure it will for you and your family, very best of luck mate.

Watched that Australian film The Tunnel last night, thought it was actually alright. It's a bit of a slow burner but it's reasonably well made and acted and it builds up the tension nicely towards the end. It's a bit like REC meets The Descent, it's no masterpiece but it's OK for nowt. I posted the free links to download it from VODO a few days ago if anyone's interested.

Hi DL,
Sorry to hear that.
Was she singled out or were a group of people made redundant?
If it was just her then it sounds like the company are perhaps trying to save some money?

The Gov. say:
Discrimination and pregnancy
It is unlawful sex discrimination for employers to treat women less favourably because of their pregnancy or because they take maternity leave. For example, this includes...
• making you redundant because of your pregnancy (you might still be made redundant for other reasons)

Some real life stuff here which may start you thinking.

Google 'Suggest' has a number of related searches based on:
made redundant while pregnant

Can't say I have enough life experience to make any sort of meaningful suggestions DL, but I think a sort of personal semi-business thing is probably the best way to go in that situation, provided there is something that is able to be offered that is profitable of course.

But I can attempt to offer a bit of luck :)

@pb and pete ...

Thanks both. Whatever happens will be decided tomorrow in the first place and then we will work from there. But thanks for your suggestions, some we had already discussed but others are a possibility.

Just like to say, that at times like these, it's good to know that Freeola and you 'lot' exist ...

thanks xx DL

Tried Netflix on my 360 this evening and wasn't impressed TBH. Picture was horrible blown up on a large screen (46'') but would probably look fine on a laptop or something. I've now uninstalled the app off the dashboard. I do subscribe to Eurosport player and that is the same to be fair but I'm not interested in watching films this way while there are much better quality alternatives. Upscaled DVD and Freeview SD are better quality than this.

Maybe this explains some of the issues you're seeing.

Really sorry to hear that DL, I know it's no consolation but it would seem that these type of things are far from uncommon at the moment (as I'm sure you know only too well). Even so it would appear that the timing is extremely unfortunate in your daughter in law's case. Hopefully something will turn up for both of you soon. pb's idea of some kind of working from home might actually be an avenue worth exploring?
