Morning all.

Went out for Chinese yesterday due to having friend come over from Germany. Meeting up with them again today after work.

I would suggest a PS2 as a better console for a 5 year old. My own son is very nearly 5, and he knows exactly what he is doing with the PS2 that now lives in his bedroom. That being said, he definitely prefers the 360 out of all the consoles in this house. Although, truth be told, he would rather be sat at the PC watching Lego Toy Story movies on Youtube...

Should be able to pick up a PS2 for really cheap by now? Not as cheap as a SNES, but easier to find and possibly even with a warranty. Also don't face the potential horror story of a power pack that won't work without serious wiggling, and the impossibility of replacing controllers if the need arises. Although this should be offset by the massive library of cheap games, and then measured against the need to pretty much buy them all from eBay.

Yeah, I don't know if I am being positive or negative either.

Newcastle was fun, and I didn't get into any trouble. I almost got my nose punched when talking to a girl with the word "Natasha" on her t-shirt. It was positioned over her left breast, so naturally I asked her what the other one was called. Thankfully, I managed to NOT mention that I thought the words "GEMMAS 21ST" on the back of the t-shirt were referring to her weight rather than somebody's birthday.

It's been a fun discussion/debate!
I've always wanted to re-play some of the retro games. Especially Animal Crossing after watching the movie. How nostalgic! Hmm.Time to do some research...

I'm sure a 5 year old would love the SNES, I'd love to get a SNES!

They go for about £40 (plus postage) on EBay at the moment and some of the games fetch stupid prices, but others you can get for £5-£10 each.

Wow I didn't expect to generate so much discussion. Maybe I should have done it in the gaming forum. :S

You saying that reminds me pb that I want to pick up some old consoles for my little boy when he grows up. Do you think 5 year olds today could enjoy a SNES instead of a 360? There must be lots of good cheap games on ebay that could give them hours of fun.

Speaking of collecting, a friend of mine is coming round today and is bringing his old Dreamcast for me because he doesn't know what to do with it.

Very happy as I was thinking about getting a Dreamcast back again. Still have an old Saturn that has seen better days and has no screws holding it together.

Personally, I am not a fan of digital distribution in the way of overtaking retail sales. I do not mind the occasional DLC or smaller PC titles as digital purchases (Mostly from Steam or things like Big Fish Games etc), but to buy full, larger games in this way has always left me feeling cold. Of course, I realise the market has drastically changed and Digital games on iOS and similar are enjoying a big surge in popularity, but I personally have just never 'bought' it.

As mentioned previously, I like the experience of physical shopping. Owning a box and physical item; even if it is only a CD or cartridge, comes with the added emotion of safety, the feeling that you 'own' or have access to the product. With the 'Cloud', I am always plagued by a certain fear that servers will fail or even be removed entirely. As mentioned in another post, it is a worrying concept if on next-gen systems, previous games are simply pulled liked their life support has been cruelly switched off. There's also the matter of collecting and trading, the former something I have been interested in for years. Picking up a rare or older title, still in its original boxed condition, is something impossible to replicate on the Digital Distribution plane.

Off out in Newcastle tonight, for the first time since I moved up over a year ago. I have had drinks on the way home from work before, but this will be my first true all-nighter on the toon. I should probably apologise to the city in advance.

From my experience of Newcastle, you can behave pretty much as well/badly/wildly/inappropriately as you wish, and you will still pale in comparison to the locals.

I miss having gaming shops on the High Street, we still have a GAME in Braintree (I think) that is useful when I really want a game today, but most of my stuff comes from online retailers. Slightly on-topic, the GAME site has been down over a week now, a clever ploy to get footfall into their stores or has somebody buggered up big time, I wonder.

Really need to fully clean the Guinea Pig cage, but I've got to go out in an hour or so and I've got a friend coming round after lunch.

If I'd thought ahead I could have done it yesterday. Too late for that now. Maybe I can do it tomorrow if I get back from work early enough.

It's complicated because although they're still owned by the same head company, they have different management structures. They also have different rules (eg Gamestation price match against anyone nearby and GAME doesn't).[/i]

Interesting you should mention that, as that isn't the case around here, in fact, it's quite the opposite. With the emergence of Grainger Games up here, GAME are actually the store that price-matched (with Grainger) whilst Gamestation stays pretty static. Having spoken with staff at GAME, they do suggest that it is pretty rare for GAME to price match, and that it is a special case for two of the stores in the area (got the information when I asked about price discrepancies between the two GAME stores). Keeps things interesting, though :)
