I suppose your right. It's that I know of a certain town of which Woolies was the only outlet of high street electricals, games and DVD's. Now that it has gone and been replaced with...well, SPAR, there is nothing in the entire town dealing in such consumables. But yeah, Woolworths in larger and more affluent towns was certainlly a ageing presence near the end of its lifespan.

Off out in Newcastle tonight, for the first time since I moved up over a year ago. I have had drinks on the way home from work before, but this will be my first true all-nighter on the toon. I should probably apologise to the city in advance.

Honestly, I will always use a physical game store over an online purchase if possible. Not only do I enjoy the experience of 'real' shopping, but I feel better by supporting the high street and especially smaller, Indie shops. I would not like to see a future where game shops (and other forms of entertainment outlets) are gone from our towns and cities completely. I know for a fact in the smaller towns which lost their Woolies a few years ago, that the shops which have replaced them are vastly inferior and missing out completely on a market opening.

Games are obviously very popular with children.

Most children don't have credit cards etc. so the shops are good for them :¬)

Part of the reason Game shops survive is that they deal in second hand games. Trading in an old game for a more recent one is far less painful that paying full price for a game.

Most retail games still haven't made their way to download on console yet, though a growing number of old games are appearing on 360 and PS3 online, but for a much higher price.

There are also plenty of customers, and more now thanks to Nintendo's push for casual gamers, who like to browse and be able to pick stuff up off a shelf.

Another good point about game stores is their tendency to do offers and cheap deals every so often. Gamestation also has a whole section dedicated to £5 games for all formats.

Oh, and you don't have to wait for the post to arrive, doubly important when the box for the game or console etc won't fit through the letterbox.

Just woke up. Oops...

Interesting topic about the game shops. My local area has lost quite a few, thanks to increased rent prices etc... Instead we now have CEX and Grangier Games. Must admit I do love both stores, but also miss the old ones. They also sell retro stuff. Gamestation does have some retro, depending on which store, but it's only about ten items. So that's more of a stock problem. Also items you may see instore are cheaper online. I remember having a conversation with a sales assistant who advised me to get the game online instead as it would be cheaper.

Woolworths and WHSmith for me were ones I would avoid. Up until Woolworths realised their prices were too high, and decreased them to more favourable ones. However, why WHSmiths still bothers with such a high entertainment section is beyond my understanding. Against, once again it's price related.

Guess it all depends on the person. I don't normally buy games online as I Love seeing, grabbing the game and then buying it there and then. I did that with Folklore and Dark Chronicle. Both rare games instore, but I will never forget the happiness when I saw them on the shelves. Even if it was more expensive!

Oh and what are peoples opinions on charity shops and cash convertors/generators etc.. selling games? Would you buy some there, if you were interested in a game you saw?

Now to go out and enjoy the sun! Hope everyone has a good weekend.

Just been playing DIRT 3. Really good game but a little buggy. Seems to stop me choosing the next open event sometimes.

Agree it's a very good game, massive improvement over it's predecessor. The events you cannot select need to be bought if you wish to play them (seriously!). The DLC thing is going a bit far IMO when you can't play all the stages in a career mode of a game you bought. You can of course skip these events but this forfeits any driver points you would have earned competing in them (if that bothers you at all). I wonder what people would think if you bought a CD and could not play all the tracks on it without shelling out a bit more of your hard earned cash?

Anyone else finding this site a bit slow today or is it just me?

Had this discussion with my dad whilst at HMV in Liverpool One (This is the HMV that has moved 3 times in the past few years). The main reason is, as you say Machie, most stuff is bought online either because people don't have the time or quite simply because it's cheaper the majority of the time. The only way these shops survive seems to be by huddling together in shopping complexes. Oh and Virgin Megastores no longer exist. They became the Zaavi stores remember ;)

Is there a future for game stores? What ever happened to Zavvi, Virgin Megastores, MVC, Woolworths, Special Reserve or Our Price? Are they still around? :S

I seem to buy everything online now, app store, mac app store (yay Vice City and the rest finally), steam. Are the prices in stores competitive with Amazon or are they just a place to buy and sell old games?

Anyway I'm popping down the newsagents to get some Opal Fruits and Marathon bar.

Morning.

Our local GAME shut down last month. It's now reopened as Gamestation.

I'm going down to take a look around.
