Digital TV, mostly subscribed to by the most apathetic voting group, the 18-30s, will now be used to send electoral votes.

This is genius. I didn't vote in the last election because I couldn't be bothered to walk over to the designated voting thingy.

Now it looks like I'll be able to do it from the comfort of my own home.

Yeehaaw!!!

I always vote for the person standing rather than the party, they are going to be "my" representative in Parliament after all. The system is flawed as it doesn't take this into account: why would you want to vote for a complete tool just so you in effect, vote labour, for example?

I agree that as the elections are every 4-5 years, there cannot be much excuse for not bothering to wander to a polling station and vote.

The phone voting system can't be far away:

"Press 1 if you want to vote for the seedy Conservative candidate, who will actively seek out underage sex whilst on holdiay to Thailand".

"Press 2 if you want to vote for the upright and honest Labour candidate who will reduce all taxes to zero, find a cure for cancer and perform several minor miracles".

"Press 3 if you want to vote for the Mongmen from Mars-Manchester Student Union party candidate who wants to abolish student loans and exams".

"Press 4 if you want to spoil your voting slip".

"Press 5 if you want to phone a friend".

"Press 6 if you want to stand a chance of winning an all expenses paid holiday to Westminster, travelfoodacomodationnotprovided, to visit the Houses of Parliament, calls cost £3 a minute, calls from mobile phones will vary..."

Nothing wrong with taking an interest in your future cookie.

The fact that there are people that are excited/concerned/interested enough in choosing their representative on the world stage suggests that we're not completely drowning in a voguish Gen X mindset of "yeah whatever".

nb - meant in a general term before anyone starts getting huffy.

It's not exciting. You walk in, you queue for 30 seconds, you get handed a card with some names on it, you go behind a curtain or into a booth, tick a box, and drop the card into a ballot box.

Then you walk out.

I just think this is 'voting for the sake of voting'. Yes, I see your argument for doing so, but I'm affraid its not for me.

Bring back the Monster Raving Loony Party. After all, the state of this nation can't get any worse, can it?

It seems that most people see 2 parties and if they dont like either, then they dont bother.
There are loads of parties out there, and there's at least 1 with an agenda that matches your beliefs.
Give that vote to them instead of not bothering.

The voter turnout last election was pathetic, and most did vote labour.
But just because a large percentage of the few that bothered voted, doesn't mean this country is represented by Blair.

Doesn't even have to be the Lib Dems, just have a look locally at the parties in your area.
A vote, even if 200 of you voted for X, means that's 200 votes that one of those "bad-as-each-other" mobs dont get, and would provide a counter view to the opinion that Britain supports Labour.

I see what you mean, but its this 'affecting other people' thats actually one of the reasons I dont vote.

If i voted, it would be in the knowledge, that in all honesty, I wasn't really that bothered who got in. Sure, I could go tick a box making a decision on what I have seen/heard in the run up to the election, but maybe thats affecting other people's lives in a way that I dont really want to.

I mean, I could (but I don't) firmly believe that the BNP are the party I want in power. Thats my right. However, thats going to adversely affect people in a way that I may not see, or may even agree with.

I know thats an extreme example, but hopefully you see what it is saying. I guess its because voting DOES affect people, that I don't want to be involved, as I dont feel strongly about it.

Hope thats reasonably clear?
