It was excellent, as expected.
There were alot more changes made to the book than there were in FOTR, Arwen, the Aragorn is-he-dead-isn't he storyline. However, all these minor differences that were scattered throughout the film were justified. I can understand why Arwen needed to be included, as Jackson is keeping the Aragorn-Arwen developed for ROTK - explaining in more depth Arwen's future choices and also to remind some audience members who she actually is.
The other changes all served purposes. After Aragorn had departed, his reappearance at Helm's Deep served to show the honour he is held in by elves and men alike, and also his determination, courage, etc.
The only change I couldn't really figure was Frodo, Sam and Gollum going to Gondor - the Nazgul-Frodo encounter showed further what power the ring has, but it didn't really need to be done. Also Faramir is much more strong willed and wise than Boromir, and I didn't think this came across well.
Action scenes made up a large part of the films, and while this isn't a bad thing, I hope that some parts are developed more in the extended cut (Merry, Pippin and the Uruk Hai, for example).
I can understand Peter Jackson leaving out Shelob for the final film, and it will be all the better because of it. He has done a fantastic job, as condensing this book into film is a very difficult task. I thought the effects were superb and I eagerly anticipate Jackson's next masterpiece.

They obviously used their swords to draw the spears to the side so they could get in behind them.
Great film, though far too many gay bits, that are becoming prevalent to entertain the simple folk.
It should have been a 15.
Conclusion: Weta is far better than ILM. You gimp.
:-D
I also liked the comical relief that was Gimli, all those short jokes. What a laugh!
I didn't care if the Ents and Gollum didn't look real they are characters and you have to treat them like one, real or not.

Yup, I'm wrong! Just read that part of the book.
