Ok, for many years I have considered learning (well trying) to play guitar.
Might get one for christmas. My dad plays bass and normal guitar but doubt he would have much time to show the ropes.

So how did you learn?
How long did it take for you to get semi - decent?

I am not really musically gifted, I can be a quick learner for most things but I have a feeling this could be quite different.

So errm let me know.
Thanks.

I'm gonna get myself a guitar. My friend's teacher is selling one as he just got himself a new one so I may buy his. My mate's got a cheap amp for sale too.

I think I've took the longest ever to learn my guitar. Totally suck I do. I can play parts of lots of songs and about 3 songs all the way through.

To be honest though I haven't really had time. Plus my top E string buzzes really bad. Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I have a group project to do. Mostly just looking at the design and getting rid of the unused code at the moment.
moving on to maintenance and adding our own stuff soon no doubt.

Good luck with yours

Uni not going too bad. Got third year project now though so its getting a little tougher.

I have to create a virtual online database to link 3 minerology databases (one in Cardiff, and two in separate places in Manchester).

Still in the design stages but I'm sure it'll get there. Got to do some 20 minute presentation about it next week. I feel an illness coming on already.

Do you have a project this year?

As for time, you'll find plenty. I assume you will want an electric guitar? I would recommend electric first anyway because you can do anything with them and they are generally easier to play.

Plus, you can put headphones on and rock at any time of the night without complaints!

And definately, definately join/start a band. Goaty will probably vouch for me here. Playing on your own is fine but it really goes up ten levels when a bunch of you make and perform your own music.

Wouldn't give it up for the world!

I am a student remember,
My time is work, drink and sleep.

I can reduce the sleep to allow guitar time can't I??

:-)

Just to add - to become semi decent (ie play a standard song from start to finish) wont take long. Obviously it depends on the song but something simple like Wonderwall wtc can learnt and played within a week or so.

Depends how much time you have!

I had lessons for about a year to learn the basics. After that it just practice practice practice.

Now I write and record songs in a band and have even made two albums. It takes a while and you will probably always think you are crap but eventually something clicks and your confidence goes sky high.

Downloading tabs and playing along to songs is a good way to practice too.
