Ok, for many years I have considered learning (well trying) to play guitar.
Might get one for christmas. My dad plays bass and normal guitar but doubt he would have much time to show the ropes.

So how did you learn?
How long did it take for you to get semi - decent?

I am not really musically gifted, I can be a quick learner for most things but I have a feeling this could be quite different.

So errm let me know.
Thanks.

Yamaha do excellent guitars. I have and AP-6a (or something like that). Got it 5 years ago as my first acoustic and I still use it.

Really, really nice guitars.

a cheap Yamaha (like an FG-410) is a sound beginners accoustic.

I recommend you start on electric because they are much easier to play, because of the 'action' on is lower, generally. If you start on an acoustic it may put you off.

Seeing as this is the guitar post.

Im getting an acoustic for Christmas to "toughen up my fingertips" and to learn the basic chords and stuff, then moving onto an electric.

Any good acoustics that anyone can recommend?

At least you can play something on them.
My mum said earlier "Remember with this gift you can't play it straight away like you can with most gift you had in the past"

I can mash the strings and make a noise. Probably still sound better than all that hardcore punky crap. :-)

Had a walk through MacCormacks after uni today. Some nice guitars in there and some damn expensive ones at that too. :-)

Dad really wants a Gibson les paul but he'll need to wait till I get a decent job before I get him one.

A nice epiphone les paul copy, or an sg probably. Those are the ones that stood out.
