this isn't a console war topic i'm starting it's just that i want to know which of the two has the best control pad for first person shooters. I have a PS2 and although the pad is good it isn't so hot when it come to first person shooters. I don't want any fanboy spam just neutral comparisons please.

Yeah, the decision's all about games when it comes down to it.

You heard correctly, I've got Super Smash Bros. Melee and it's been in my GameCube since it's June 25th release.

Fair enough, but did you really need to quote all that? A cheap way of getting your word count up, methinks.

How about Nintendo, Rare, LucasArts, SEGA, etc? Believe me, I've done my research and there are more developers working exclusively for GameCube than X-Box - it's business sense.

Did I say Mario Sunshine was the best platformer ever? No. I said it was POSSIBLY the best platformer ever. This is because the majority of computer games magazines (EDGE, NGC, NOM, Computer & Video Games, GamesMaster and more) rated it very highly. It's also worth noting that an English magazine can hardly get the full experience playing a Japanese version. I'm also interested as to who these people are, as I've not heard of them.

I thought when it came to specs it was always about producing the highest numbers? You seem to be tangling yourself up in your words. Also, I didn't say the GameCube was better, I said they were more or less the same. Because the GameCube, like all Nintendo products, is very differently designed to the other consoles, and works differently. If you break all those numbers down, you'll see that the two consoles are very similar, and feel foolish yourself.

Stupid? At least Nintendo have considered gamers who cannot get broadband access which is less than can be said for Microsoft. The above paragraph really seems to be waffle, as you really have no idea how GameCube Online will work. All I know is that, as always, Nintendo have gone that extra mile and catered for everyone. Also, when all is said and done, the X-Box still doesn't come out cheaper:

Nintendo GameCube Console - £129.99
Nintendo GameCube Broadband/56K Modem - £19.99
TOTAL - £149.98

Microsoft X-Box Console - £159.99
TOTAL - £159.99

The GameCube is designed so that gamers do not need a hard drive, keeping the budget gamer in mind.

The converter is also available on the GameCube but please, don't buy it, as the hype is true, it really is a great controller. The buttons are just right, the Z button is fine (once gotten used to) and the shoulder buttons are nice and quiet, with no DreamCast-esque 'Klungky' noises.

3.5 GB for X-Box, 1.5 GB for GameCube. However, the GameCube Disk is a lot better at storing and compacting data than the X-Box DVD, so it works out about even.

I don't know a single person who has an X-Box (in real life) and I know about four people who have a GameCube. They're all completely satisfied with it and agree it has a great future. Plus, I'm sure the people you described will keep their 'Cubes, once they see the superb line-up.

Erm.. not really. Just because they make games for everyone, doesn't mean they're just for children.

The 3 that i have *'d are probably the only 3 that if were out on the xbox i would look into getting.

There are some good named games there, but most of them that sound any good are already coming out on the xbox and/or PS2. (maybe even pc)

Games such as mario sunshine... you say 'its the best platformer ever' but have you actually played it? Is it out yet. I know there was alot of hype surrounding it but according to people who have played the japanese version, say it is not it is all hyped upto be. They actually seem to be disapointed with the game. I havnt played it so i cant judge.

The xbox undoubtedly(sp) is the more powerful console out of the three. The facts state it and people know it. If you read all the details that are posted all over the web you can quite obviously see that the xbox has the more advanced technology. Its not about how can produce the highest numbers. One of the stupidest things that Nintendo could have done was to let 56k modem uses on to their systems. Its not really about how many people you can get online and call it a success. If you are to let 56k uses on, the chances are that servers will flow and their will be network problems somewhere along the line. Look at the Dreamcast. that had online capabilities ages ago, but thats probably where it floped the most. The servers were too slow, no content downloading. Unless you are willing to pay alot of money for a external hardrive, gamecube owners wont have the oppotunity to download large bulk files. The implecations are endless with a hardrive, i dont know how much they are selling for, but if PS2 and gamecube owners are having to buy all these peripherials just to play their gamecube online, suddenly the xboxs price doesnt seem soo bad. Infact at a guess (i have no idea of the price for Hardrives and other doodads for the ps2 and GC) the xbox comes out cheapest once all is said and done.

I dont think it is that great. I agree that some might find it comfortable with such a small controller, but not for me and lots of other people.
Another thing about it that the button layout is just appauling. Why is that Z button there??? Why is the 'A' button soo flippin big compared to the rest on the buttons??? Why is the d-pad rediculously(sp) small, trying to do fine adjustments to movements or anything else needed of the d-pad has the obvious flaw of being to 'figity'. The two trigger buttons are too 'Klungky' and square. They make an awful 'Klang' sound when you press on them. The PS2 and xbox pads are alot more feesable. Some sort of hybrid controller would be good. There is actually a thing you can buy which allows you to play the xbox with a ps2 controller. i saw it in a shop the other day, but didnt check the price. So thats another thing. I dunno about that one. Alot of my friends who were given GC's for birthdays and such are very dissapointed. Most of them havnt got the reciept but wish they did. I dont think i know anyone who has over 2 games for their Gamecube yet. Must be a shortage of mature games for it.

Has anyone ever noticed that nintendo is turning into a toy comapny and not a games developer?

Timesplitters 2, Die Hard Vendetta and Metroid Prime are all you'll ever need for the time. There all FPS, there all very good, and they're all very different from each other.

Sounds like you should get an Xcube, or maybe a Gamebox.

Back to the original post, again, though I think you need an Xbox for the best console FPS games, that's what you wanted it for, wasn't it?

Still think you would be much happier with a PC though.

Meh, well yours was slightly less stupid.

Seriously though, I reckon a GC is more worth it then an X-box if you already have a PS2. The PS2 and X-box both tend to have more 'PC' style games, so then to have a console with a load of brilliant fun 'console' style games is perfect.

[What I’m about to say is my opinion, but mainly fact. What console you buy will be mainly up to what type of gamer you are. Both consoles are great, but seeing as I have the GameCube, I’ll tell you a little about it below.]

Well, if you're getting a console on top of your PS2, then the GameCube will be the best bet. The reason being? Most games coming out on X-Box will be on the PS2 and GameCube anyway, so what you should decide it is the first and second party games. Here, I believe GameCube wins hands down. All of the above will be out by the end of the year (with the exception of ten or so) and are tipped to be very good. Combine that with the fairly large amount I’ve missed and the list that hasn’t been featured in magazines yet and you’ve got a huge variety of games on your hands by Christmas.

Also, the GameCube has been proven to match and better the X-Box in some areas and vice versa. This leaves the two fairly even when it comes to graphics and power. For example, the GameCube is capable of certain special effects the X-Box cannot achieve. Also, when it comes to polygon count, the two are more or less even. Aswell as this, the GameCube uses a different kind of processor than the X-Box, but is the equivalent of an 800Mhz one when dealing with the X-Box’s kind. This is more than the X-Box’s 733Mhz, so you see the GameCube is just as good as the X-Box technically. For a more in depth description of the consoles, I find that the following site is the best:

Also, online gaming’s looking promising for Nintendo, and it’s out already in Japan [America to follow suit very soon] with it’s first release [Phantasy Star Online] and the promise of more soon. If you’re wanting to get hooked up to the internet, Nintendo have designed the GameCube so that people who can’t get broadband can buy a 56K modem for the same price or less. You’re looking at about a £20.00 modem [broadband or 56K] with no hard drive or installation necessary. Monthly and yearly fees are sketchy for over here, but it’s going to be either free, £6.00 a month or £100.00 a year if what rumours suggest is correct. GameCube online will reach Europe early next year, at about the same time as X-Box LIVE.

The controller’s the best ever designed in my opinion and will fit into your hand snugly. It caters for all sizes of hands, no matter what some people will say, and features superb left and right analogue shoulder buttons. Though the D-Pad’s a little small, most games are programmed to overcome this minor problem, and you’ll soon get used to it. All the buttons are the right sizes and in the correct, easy to reach positions, making it the perfect controller for almost anything. The analogue sticks are offset, which is best for first person shooters and each one has precise accuracy. It really is a great controller.

Also, the price is significantly less, and won’t eat such a large hole in your pocket. Sure the X-Box has a DVD, but you have to pay an extra £20.00 to get it working, and with a PS2 already, you don’t really need that feature. The GameCube makes up for the lack of hard drive by producing a superb memory card that will easily store save files for about 15 – 20 games. This is just £14.99, last time I checked, so it’s great value too. It’s also worth noting that the games are about £5.00 less than X-Box ones, with peripherals being a couple of quid less too. And with four controller ports, no multi-tap is necessary. Nintendo really have the budget gamer in mind.

Plus critics have tipped the X-Box to fail, and the GameCube to catch up with the PS2, so you won’t feel short-changed. Also, with something like one hundred exclusives by May next year and Nintendo on a roll of original, quality and innovative titles, there’s a lot of life and potential left in that box of wonders.
