Just got an email today from Microsoft saying that Iam one of the people to be chosen for Beta testing for XBox live. The email says :
" Thanks for waiting to participate in the beta. The response exceeded 100,000.
We wanted to let you know we plan to send you an email no later than September 20th regarding your status to potentially be included in our beta test program.
You're at the top of our pre-registration list for our ongoing beta program. So you'll be the first to create a Gamertag and the first to know when it's time to get in this incredibly intense, high-speed gaming experience. That means you can start creating a rep before most.
In the meantime, check out http://www.xbox.com/live/ for the latest news and updates on Xbox™ Live. Or, copy and paste the link into your browser.

I think thats exactly what it will involve. All it is really is getting the service earlier than everyone else. We may be able to use it by say October and then if the testing is a success then they will release it for everyone else to use. Its better to have problems or for it to fail completely during a beta test with a few thousand people that are getting the service for free, than having problems when hundreds of thousands of paying customers are using it.
Hopefully the people selected will get a free online game or two to keep, a communicator as well as a years service to the service.

I think that if you do get the email you will have a good chance of getting accepted. Especially as Broadband still isnt that available in the UK. I hope that I get picked as then there will probably be some nice free stuff in it :)
