Well, to be precise (Or trying to be) the Elves gave as you know a substantial amount of the Palantír to the Númenóreans, which ' I think and i'm sure' was the full seven (Im not 100% sure) Elendil and his sons saved them, due to the downfall (Or sinking) of the Númenór. Eventually the Seven Seeing stones where brought to Middle-earth, and then eventually the Dúnedain controlled them or at-least layed them at various locations, namely be Amon Sul as you've mentioned, Anu-minas, Elostirion, Osgiliath, Orthanc (As mentioned) , Minas Ithil and Minas Anor.
At least it's not as geeky as that i12 thing.
