I'm fed up with the really noisy fans in my PC - they're driving me insane. I've had a look at a Water Cooling Kit available from Maplins, with the following equipment:

2 x Waterblocks
1 x thermal paste
9ft of ¼" silicon tubing
1 x Fill jug
4 x Different Mounting Clips
1 x Slot 1/A adaptor
3 x Slot and Socket hold down devices
1 x P4 device
1 x 12v Pump/Res
1 x Box full of hose clamps/screws.

I have no idea what this means for the welfare of my PC once installed, but I need to know, for those who've used or know more about water cooling, if the water tank/reservoir required is relatively small (ie. fits into a small room), and where the coolers will be installed ie. on the CPU, GPU, but is there a need for anywhere else?

I'm asking this as the two additional fans I have on the case produce the loudest noise, and I want to get rid of these as well.

Finally, a thing about Peltier devices - I've heard about it can channel heat so that it's very hot on one side, and cool on the other - where does this heat go without boiling the PC - would a water cooler be a good thing to use next to the Peltier device?

I hope someone can help.

By the way, does the title "Acoustic Damping Material" appeal to you?

http://www.quietpc.com/powersnooze.php

What do you think? Will it really "dampen" the noise, or just burn up everything inside after smelling of plastic?

Yeah, I was planning on that.

Geez, can you two stop arguing for a minute?

Anyway, I've concluded that the case fan generates quite a bit of noise compared with the rest of the system - so I'll change that next.

I'm not doubting your experiences, but the article had several examples (and we're talking proper 400w PSUs here, not crappy 130w sparkies) or the PSU fans stopping for several days before the user actually noticed, and most of them was only because of 50c ambiant temperatures etc.

I know from experiance that you get bad things happening if the PSU fan isnt working, like the power supply tripping out.

Nah, PSUs can get extremely hot before they blow. There was an article on Slashdot about it.

If you want to know about the PSU, turn it off and look at the fan. It's supposed to have a model number on it. Plug it in to Google and see if it's creating a lot of noise. Anything over 30dba is loud.

Well, I hate to say "I told you so", but...

Water cooling is so much more easier than you would think and works so well, deltajava you will have to get a papst fan for your psu as you can't change the CFM of it the Power supply may blow on ya, i would be supprised if the PSU gives out that much noise?, when its on try sticking a pen in the fan to stop it and see if that makes a differance.

I fancy water cooling, could be a laugh...

Although, it is quite a long way down, on a very, very long list..
