I don’t think I would be expressing a minority opinion here if I said I enjoy computer games. In particular I enjoy games that involve killing things, often human beings. Recently, I have sampled the delights of Medal of Honour, Max Payne, RTCW, Operation Flashpoint, and most recently Soldier of Fortune 2. Now, I love Soldier of Fortune 2. The reason I love it is not for the beautiful graphics (though they are stunning), the twisting story (though it is intriguing) or Madeline Taylor (um…), the reason Soldier of Fortune 2 is enjoyable is because you get to kill things in the head, in graphic detail, and with a fantastic selection of weapons. And don’t try to pretend you’re any different.
I also have what many (including myself) would describe as an unhealthy obsession with guns. I can tell you what caliber rounds an M4A1 Carbine assault rifle fires, three different names for the SA80, what the hell an M203 is, the difference between an AK47 and an AK74, and why you need to be afraid of Vinnie Jones in Snatch telling you he has “Desert Eagle, point five oh” written down the side of his.
However, despite what the press will tell you, I am not yet a homicidal lunatic. Finding out so much information about firearms and seeing people die in horrific ways on screen has taught me a lot. As a result, I am about as anti-guns as anyone you’re likely to meet. The idea of them being freely available to the public as they are in America terrifies me. The idea of people keeping them and firing them for fun disgusts me. They are lethal weapons. They are not for “fun”. You may be the sanest person in the world but to own a gun is dangerous in so many ways, as I have seen for myself (as closely as I ever want to). I have to admit that it seems conceivable that violence on the scale of SoF2 may push an already unbalanced person over the edge, but anyone possessing a sound and rational mind can only draw one conclusion. Mr. Heckler, Mr. Koch, take your guns and stick them where the sun don't shine. If the tabloids feel like a headline, how about “Computer games taught me guns are evil”.

I can't believe the bare faced cheek of the to55er who started this topic. He admits to have never had anything to do with guns but, like the idiot politicians who banned guns, thinks anyone who does has a screw loose.

Why punish thousands of people because of the actions of one?

Seems like everyones putting up their fists in here then.

Now my original question was - What about space-age laser Guns? Are they ok? :-)

But secondly, this topic isn't 'immature' and has a point. Sure it may have been done before but still it is very true. Though guns in games do not effect me in anyway they may effect other people and the way in which others view them may also have an effect. For that last part, parents for example. Most parents wouldn't want to see their 5 year old shooting up Nazi's and stuff. That's why the age restrictions are there on the box though, they need to be taken note of.

Now lower the fists and make Hippy love and peace and stuff.

It's not a stupid point, it's a feeling held by a lot of people, who are just as welcome to post their opinions here as anyone..

I think I'm something like this - I've been playing games involving guns, real or fantasy, since I was about 6. I do know a fairly scary amount about them, thanks in particular to CS, but one thing I got taught fairly clearly if that guns are not particularly fun things when turned on other people. Computer games hit this fact home fairly hard, and demonstrate the effects - like, people die..

Depending on your mentality, you either use this fact to take one and employ it on others who you want to maim, or realise the horrible effects and..don't. Games don't make people want to kill in real life, to the majority of people they show exactly why not to use guns, a person has to be disturbed beyond a point not to take this on board..If anything they just help take anger out in a virtual world.

This is another of those topics I need a ctrl+v type answer for..

I'm not gunna bother arguing with you. If you were mature, you'd not reply to a topic if you didn't like it, instead of putting "This is crap". End of arguement. If you try to carry it on, it'll show how immature you are!

The idea of FOGchat is for a forum member to be able to express their own opinions in a thread! Now if you don't like it, don't post "...this crap here...". This user may have spent a fair bit of time on their post! SO why don't you instead post, I disagree with this topic. You are just to unfair to other forum members. Looks like you're the complete idiot!
