Depends on your costs and your prices though. Sony might sell 2 millions consoles at a consumer-incentive loss (common practice for consoles) and not make money back on games for years. I don't have the figures, but the N64 was a profitable console, and so it was a success.

Actually, Intellivision, Colecovision, Magnavox, Atari and a few others all had consoles out before Nintendo entered the market.

What? The N64 was a c**k up? Where have you been? Ya know, it's not hard to tell you're a Sony fanboy.
hmmm.. not sure where you're headed on this one.
As IB and others have said, no-one cares too much about how much plastic you shift, a console's success is judged on profits alone. Nintendo deliver profits. And that's it.

One certain company called Sony asked Nintendo to produce a Console back in 1992 with them, which would use 32bit CD format games. Nintendo agreed at first and then pulled the plug (biggest mistake in there history) so Sony said ok we will make our own, and the rest is history not even 64bit chip could help the N64 from being the biggest c**k up in history using a format that belongs in the 80's was not a company with absolute professionals in charge.
