Welcome to the grand preview of the most anticipated release of the game WWF No Mercy for the Nintendo 64 entertainment system.

No Mercy is the last of it's kind in the hit series from THQ including: WCW vs. The World, WCW vs. nWo, WCW Revenge, WWF WrestleMania 2000 and now No Mercy. It is the last reproduction of this engine because THQ has undoubtedly decided to progress further into the market and develop for the next wave of systems (i.e. Sega Dreamcast, Sony Playstation 2, and the GameCube). You can just imagine the possibilities that AKI will produce in the near future, mind boggling, just mind boggling. Well enough of the introduction, because chances are you just want the preview... lets mosey on.

OVERVIEW:

How can THQ possibly do what they do, how could they possibly manufacture a game even better and more advanced than WrestleMania 2000? Who the hell knows but they've done it again with No Mercy.

At first glance you'll notice that No Mercy is strikingly similar to WM 2k... Well that's because it's a clone. WM 2K's engine is the best and most popular engine on the Nintendo 64, mostly because of it's nice, blocky, life like graphics, and it's pick up and go controls. In WWF Attitude, players hated how you pressed up, down, left, right, do a cartwheel while balancing pooh on a stick above your head just to do a DDT. Not only is the WM 2k style comfortable for your hand to control... it's easier to learn as well.

THQ is the publisher of this title, don't get publisher and developer mixed up now. AKI produces the game, does what is needed to do to get you guys to like it. (and believe me you do) THQ introduces it, advertises it and makes it have more of a feel for the WWF fans, but AKI does the brunt of the work for the most part, commend them on a job well done.

PRESENTATION:

Skeptics have argued that anybody who likes the graphical nature of this game is in-artistic, I guess that makes the majority of gamers in-artistic right... I think not. The blocky character graphics give the game a more 3-D atmosphere as the polygons appear to be larger. Textures show better on the character and a more crisp organized feel comes apon the game as you are beating the living snot out of one another, without those polygonal figures... The moves just wouldn't look right. Good job.

The introduction to the new Smackdown arena is now a full fledged feature in No Mercy. Looking around the arena is a beautiful piece of eye candy, as much as any other programmer could offer. Capturing the very essence of wrestling shows at the bud. The stage backdrops are all blue, with the entrance leading out to the ramp..... the curtainy textures are blending into one another very nicely and the even looking above the arena as you have your opponent in an ankle lock (camera zooms around) you can see the rafters shaping up over the Smackdown set like in real life. How does AKI do it? Who the hell knows but lets just hope and pray that they continue to do it.

The new and improved animations play a key factor in outshining it's older brother (WM 2k) as the animations have more of a realistic gravitational feel to them. Lets look at the animation of the regular old suplex.(not standing, not snap) The man doing the move pauses about 1/2 a second before hoisting his opponent into the air... a smooth arch is formed as you follow the motion of the suplex. Before dropping him down to the mat, there is another 1/2 - 1 second delay allowing various limbs to move, and to leave a dramatic flow. Very nicely added. Comparing this to WM 2k's animations, where the character would only have about 1/2 the movement in the move and the reactions after the moves would sometimes not match up. An enhancement. Of course there are many more moves that have been enhanced for this knock out, but you'll have to wait and see them for yourself.

The textures in this game as I stated above are really nicely done. They flow throughout all the zones on the characters body (i.e. chest to abdominal) without glitching up of being cut off. The apron textures are the same as all the other wrestling games but they change colour to match surroundings. Also since WM 2K AKI has added the new floor texture, the black mats and the black divider wall to match. This gives the player a true WWF atmosphere as the dividing wall gives WWF's ringside a truly unique feel like no other wrestling fed has.

GRAPHICS:

Ok, your going to sit there smiling at me thinking your all smart because you think that WrestleMania's graphics are crap... If so that's the prettiest little piece of crap I've ever seen in my life. You see, WWF Attitude's graphics were better than any of AKI's titles to the majority of the gamers... But that's NOT to say AKI's graphics are bad. Think about it. What would you rather have... an amazing game where all the moves look nice and it's easy to control, the animations are much sweeter as they graze your eyes and the graphics aren't as good as they could be, or you could have amazing graphics, bad collision detection, and poor animations... The person who wanted the most out of the experience would choose the first choice.

Collision detection can easily make or break a game... and well, lets just put it this way... this games made it by 3 1/2 years of hard work. No one can say edgewise to it's collision detection comparing off to WCW Mayhem, or even WWF Attitude. They both had glitchy collision detection and it really wasn't fun at all when you hit somebody in the head with a tazer and it counts as nothing. Just think about it, how many times does the proximity system of WM 2k help you and make the animations look better than the direct system of any other game (excluding Smackdown 1, and 2)

As you can see, AKI most likely didn't choose the other graphics for a purpose. The pro's: Easier texture mapping, better animations, better hit detection, matches environment.. the cons: not as graphical as it could be. Really the pro's outshine the cons a great deal.

A/V Input:

The audio input in this game is amazing ever since Aki decided to input the mp3 formatted songs. MP3's are clear ,not extremely large to an extent, and the sound quality is higher. That's why THQ decided to go with it. The theme songs of all your favorite wrestlers are in the house as they come to the ring they are greeted by them giving an even more realistic atmosphere as the character comes down to the ring.

Oh no, what am I going to do. They took the entrance movies out of the game!!!! NO!!!!! *cough cough* Excuse me.... but the entrance video's they had in the game were given a lot of flak by, well, EVERYONE. They were very pixilated an almost blurry on the eyes. There was no command to stop the scenes when they started and well.... who can honestly say they watched them more than 20% or less of the time. It makes more sense to free up the room to add another glorious add on to the game.

GAMEPLAY/CONTROL:

Do you really need me to explain the controls? If yes then go away and buy WM2K and find out because they're excactly the same!

FEATURES:

No Mercy's has been dubbed the most loaded game with features for this engine. Ladder matches, climb up and grab the belt/case, depending on whether it's a title match or not. Special Guest Referee matches are in and a very nice addition too. But THERE IS NO TABLE MATCHES, HELL IN A CELL MATCHES, INFERNO MATCHES OR ANY OTHER "GIMMICK" MATCHES. Just thought I'd clear that up for the people still thinking there is.

There is tables in the game which you can break, this is done by performing a move on it. The tables can be found at ringside, in the bar (pool table) and in the locker room.

Smackdown Mall is a very innovative mode indeed. Have you ever been stuck at a footy match when you wanted to beat the crap out of Triple H in Wm 2k? Well then you will have a treat here... if you have a Game Boy colour you can bring the No Mercy GBC version with you to where you want to go and where it's allowed and play it there... then with the help of a transfer pack you can upload your data with the Smackdown mall and unlock secrets... do not worry if you don't have a GBC, you can still unlock secrets with the n64 version.

Look for the steel cage match to return in No Mercy, this mode is definetly one of the best in Wm 2K. The object is to climb over the cage and plant both feet on the floor before your opponent does, pretty simple except it's 15 feet high and getting thrown from it can mean an instant injury.

All the regular modes from the other titles from Aki will come into this game once again. HIAC and Inferno will not be in No Mercy... HIAC ran too slow and there's no more room for inferno. Aki will NOT use the expansion pack because the Asian marketplace does not have it and the N64dd did not sell very well at ALL.

SUMMARY:

Buy this game and play it often. This game has managed to combine what's been absolutley adored about the different games available and rolled them into one fat 64-bit package. This game is not just for wrestling fans. This game is for gamers. It's multiplayer fun. It's the best of the best glued together. It's WWF No Mercy, and 'That's the bottom line.'

I don't mind him running over Stone Cold, he was just annoyed about coloured people always being held back in their career.
BUT THAT'S NO EXCUSE FOR SCREWING KANE OUT OF THE TITLE ON SMACKDOWN!
Although I did hear that Kane attacked him earlier...

Any way, WON'T SOMEONE BEAT THE ROCK? It's starting to get boring!

I prefer Pummeltry (except for it's stupid name!), flying moves and Swanton bombs better than dancing.
And Lita's great because she actually wrestles.
The Goodfathers EX hoes are just for decoration or having showers with as far as Eddies concerned!

YEAH, what a great tune they have. I can't believe one of my favourite's and Too Cool's good mate Rikishi ran over Stone Cold.
PS Mandy and Victoria rock compared to Lita. And, no offence, but you're being kind of biased towards the PS2 and Smackdown 2.

Errrrr, somehow, I think you are being biased here. And I've heard the Uncle trick loads of times, and it's a bunch of crap. This site has turned into a respected, civilised place where we try not to be biased and childush, no offence, but try and calm down and look at the facts. PS I CAN'T WAIT FOR SMACKDOWN 2 AS IT LOOKS GREAT!!!
