They don't make them (not any good ones anyway) but they get companies like Squaresoft (final fantasy) and Capcom (Resident Evil) and Konami (Metal Gear Solid).
It works well but they won't get a mascot out of it!

Sonic and Mario aren't just for little kids!
Otherwise they would be incredibly easy and have a short life span (like most games aimed at kids).
They're games for everyone and that's why they're so great!

Oh, and Sony don't have an icon because they don't MAKE the games so they don't own any characters.

(All the characters mentioned above are owned by independant companies who9 can and will make games for other systems too.)

It's because of sega sonic and nintendos mario that they have problems competing with the user base of Sony. Sony realised long ago that all the people who grew up with Commodore 64 and spectrums, even nes and master systems are probably in their mid twenties to thirties and have ALWAYS aimed their console at that market. Although having Mario on the N64 and sonic on the Dreamcast has attracted the younger player, older guys will be put off by it, seeing it as a kids machine. Sony just doesn't have that stigma attached to it.
Nintendo has Mario,
Sega has Sonic,
Sony has four symbols, circle, triangle, square and X!

In a way i agree with pulsed. It has been kind of "traditional" for a console to have a character/icon to be related to. Though i am sure that PS2 will not be damaged by not having one, i think it can still be an important marketing device, especially to the younger market. Let's face it, most gamers are youngsters,(if not in age, in behaviour. Believe me, i am one of these:->) and young people relate better to a character than to the console itself. (Just look at the Pikachu64!) Judging by the design of the PS2, it has been aimed more at the older gamers, but they still need to get the youngsters on side to make it a great success.

This is just my opinion.

Well PS1 didn't have any icon character, look how many units it shifted.

You can't tell me that the icon is needed.

Yes, Grix is right. While it might be nice for PS2 to have an "icon", it's not really necessary - as with PS1, the machine itself *is* the icon.

IMHO

Did you not hear me? It is the console.

They are marketing the console, with the console.
