None of these characters are icons for Sony. Sony hasn’t had an icon, and probably will never have one.

We shouldn’t be bothered if our games go to other consoles as it just proves they are good

Both games Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot started out on the PSX about 4 years ago, as people have said, Sony doesn't need an icon as the PSX and PS2 is recognize worldwide as a world class console.

Having an icon might not necessarily be a good thing, as it has to appeal to everyone, if it doesn’t and the icon appeals to the older generation, and not the younger generation you have just lost half of your sales.

People over 13 realize it’s not the icon that makes the console good but the games, But any younger then that and they see something that’s the ‘craze’ at the moment they would want that. And Console Companies know this just like as soon as there is some craze with the little kiddies some console will snap it up as another temporary icon, like Nintendo and the Pokemon with Pikachu. Little kids will see the Pikachu and instantly think this is the best. But this would have out the “older generation” off.

With the PS2 having such great power it doesn’t need an icon anyway as it sells it’s self, And no matter what advertising strategies you have you will never be able to sway all of the market.

We don’t need an icon anyway As Thommie said…

Sony has four symbols, Triangle, Cirlce, X and Square!

Right now I have probably bored everyone if they bothered to read, sorry that’s all.

*SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT*

Anyway just to dissapoint some Sony fans.

It has been mentioned in this topic that Crash Bandicoot could be thought of as Sony's consoles icon.

This is where ther *SPOILER ALERT* takes place:

Nintendo ARE going to be releasing a Crash Bandicoot game for the Gamecube! (It's official (see NOM))

Also Lara Croft has been mentioned as a Playstation icon:

How come she is on Dreamcast, PC and Gameboy Color?
(And Lucozade)

Ok, here's the origin of the X in PSX.

The playstation was originally made as a cd drive for the SNES! The very first playstations to come out, and there was very few sold, had a slot above the cd drive for SNES carts, these were called Playstation Xtra or PSX for short! It didn't take off and sony decided to cut their losses and market their OWN console which is the playstation we know and love. The mags at the time picked up on the PSX initials and they stuck!

So there you go the secret origin of the X!

Everyone seems to have the idea now.
Sony don't make games and so they don't have a character. But they don't need a character as the PS was such a great and easy machine to develop for, hundreds of developers brought a variety of characters to it (from Crash to Lara).

By the way PuLsEd OuT, don't say that a FMV is what makes a game good or Grix and his brain will target you in a murder plot. FMV is a nice little extra to add atmosphere, that's all! Don't say I didn't warn you!

You are right, Babylonian. It was indeed a code name for the system before it was released. I got this info from a supplement that came with the latest issue of PS TWO magazine. You should all get it if only for the PS2 booklet that accompanied it. Like the "little blue book" it has all the info you could need about the PS2.

P.S. My little blue book arrived this morning. Really good innit.
