how poor the quality of the pictures they will come back crying to nintendo and sega.

Ah, but the manufacturers of VCR's are rivals too. That's partly my point - all VCR's have their own special features, but at the end of the day they all play standard VHS tapes.
I agree it's not likely to happen any time soon - if ever - but it would be nice.
VCR's are not good, enough maybe piraters could do that but i can't see it happening.

To expand a little on this...
I'd like - eventually - to see a situation where games consoles are like VCR's. i.e. every machine has a few bells and whistles specific to the manufacturer, but they all basically play the same games. You could take your Sony game round to a mates and play it on his Sega, just like a VHS tape.

No, I don't dislike you at all! I'm merely pointing out my own, opposing opinions, hoping to create a balanced picture for the neutrals who may be pondering whether or not to buy one. Well, maybe 'opposing opinions' is too strong - let's call it a different angle on the same facts.
But how can you point out it's "not worth it", when to me it so obviously is? For me, it's a bargain. It's not a question of not admitting I'm wrong - I really, *really* want this machine - as, apparently, do so many others.
If anything, I commend you for posting reasonable, well-argued points; the comparisons you draw are valid, I just draw a different conclusion from them, as pointed out above.

I obviously feel differently, particularly because the machine is already selling at five times the rate of PS1. Only time will tell, though.

I don't see a problem with that. I've already posted elsewhere that I believe all good games should appear on as many formats as possible. That said, though, I'm sure there will also be PS2 exclusives, too. For example, Polyphony Digital - those of GT, GT2 and GT2000/GT3 fame - were approached by Microsoft, but refused to jump ship.

I wasn't aware that we were arguing - just that we had different views on the subject.

Of that you can be sure... and you won't be the only one! :-)
One point i must make is that the X-BOX is probably going to be about the same price as the PS2. Although i must admit that the X-BOX does look very impressive on paper. My only worry is that it is made by Microsoft. Their track record in the past does leave a lot to be desired. Just look at the way that they have cornered the market with computer software. They closed in and took a strangle hold on the lot. I wouldn't like to see that happen in the games market. Obviously Microsoft are a massive worldwide company, and the best way to get the profits is to corner the market, but is that the best for all of us?
In my opinion, no.
I think that PS2 WILL be a great machine but I don't think that it will be nearly as successful as the original PS. I also PERSONALLY think that it is doomed to follow the Saturns path (no need to argue. I KNOW that I COULD well be wrong).
If you have loads of money then the PS2 is well worth buying as it WILL have lots of good games. But if you don't have that sort of money, most of those good games should be appearing on the Xbox and Gamecube as well along with some extra exclusive games for these systems.
There's no need to argue against my every point if I disagree. Instead, when you get your PS2 and think that it's really good, satisfy yourself in the knowledge that I'm missing out on it!
