Okay, I'll give you some pointers...

The average game save on PS2 takes up between 80Kb and 144Kb - some are over that by a little, some by much more.

From the Nintendo site, URL given earlier:

SSX Tricky takes up just 5 blocks for the game options, but a replay takes up 27 blocks. So that's options plus two replays, and your card is full. Another game, another card required.

Madden NFL 2002 is worse.

Franchise: 59 blocks
Rosters: 40 blocks
User Profiles: 3 blocks
Settings: 2 blocks
Created Teams: 1 block

I have the game on PS2, and the saves are as follows:
Franchise - 1,331Kb or 1.3Mb - that leaves me 6.7Mb free for other saves
Rosters: 470Kb
User Profiles: 146Kb
Settings: 143Kb
Teams: I don't have any created, so can't give this info.

The fact that a Franchise takes up a whole memory card will presumably mean that you can't, for example, use your own created teams in a Franchise game. Unless, of course, you can load data from two memory cards into the same game. But even if that is possible, that would mean having to buy two memory cards to get the best from one game.

I have all this Madden info on the same memory card as my GTA3 save (almost 1.7Mb), 22 Gran Turismo 3 full-race replays, and still 3.5Mb free for further saves.

Of course, the size (or block size) is only important relative to how much the typical game uses. If a gamecube's 1/16th of the size held the same as another system's full card, because less of the info was put onto the card, or compression was more efficient, it'd change things again.

Then again, i don't have a clue how effective each system is, so it seems fair to assume, until anyone knows better, that 1 unit of memory (blocks permitting) saves the same amount of the average game on any of the systems.

And since i very much doubt that anyone can reliably claim to know any of that, i guess i'll go with wookie

You're not getting a very good deal this time round either, I'm afraid!

I'm so glad you said that!

Here's a little comparison - something which I only found out today... don't take it as a pop at Nintendo, just the final word in the Great Memory Card Debate.

The GC memory cards are only 4 megaBITS, not megaBYTES.

That's 512k - quarter of a megabyte. Four times that of a PS1 memory card, twice the capacity of an N64 card, but sixteen times smaller than those of PS2 and Xbox.

Not only that, but it still uses the 'blocks' system - with 59 on each card, one block is just over 8.5k. Meaning that if a game-save only takes 1k you have 7.5k of wasted space.

And a number of games take up half or more of a memory card, while some (Madden NFL 2002) take almost a whole card!

The RRP is £14.99 for a 4Mbit card. Half the price of PS2 cards, for one sixteenth of the memory capacity.

Next person to say that PS2 cards are a rip-off gets slapped with a wet kipper!

How about the sd memory units?
i don't know what they'll be priced like, but they're so big (and yet so small), they have huge potential to do... stuff.

Yep, the N64 had them and I got one for free when I brought Blast Corps. Lucky me.

In comparison to other memory cards on other systems, £15 is quite the bargain.

I just spent £20 to get an official PS2 mem card. Luckily I found a 2nd hand one, cos there was no way I was gonna pay £27 which is how much a first hand one costs. £15 or whatever it is for a Gamecube one is a bargain in comparison!

Actually (I think) the Gc memory cards are 4mb and around £15, the PS2 is 8mb and £30. I'm not really bothered, least the GC memory cards aren't a rip of like the N64 ones (256k (tiny) for £15) !
