“However, the forum is just being "used". Where as forums like the FOG are ever-popular, with people visiting regularly and generally having fun, the Web Design forum is merely being "used" for question and such like. Well, no longer! I want to turn this forum into a proper community.”
He is right here, this forum is only really used by people wanting questions answered, but I think that this forum is probably the best on the site. Mainly because nearly everyone in here knows what they are talking about. But I don’t like how the forum is used just for questions.
So here is what I propose, we use this thread for general chat. Not just web design, anything at all. Since not many people pass through this forum anymore, it won’t get spammed up too much, it’ll just be a place where people can go to be themselves.
If it doesn’t work, then fine. I just think this thread will be able to make this forum more of a community.
So… what’s up everyone? :0)

Just let me know if that's all right, I think I'll probably order it tonight or tomorrow if it is. Thanks.
Also, could you tell me why Mandrake is so bad, I thought it looked quite cool. Cheers.
I've already got mIRC for some reason, don't know why because I've never been on it. I'll get the list of my hardware specs to you later. I'm just thinking, is it worth getting a book with a disk with Debian on it, because I've just looked and it's about 185mb. This will take days to download on my 56k.

1st rule of Linux - ALWAYS get the latest version at whatever cost.
2nd rule of Linux - never get Mandrake. It's truly awful.

Well, if you want a proper Linux system and learn Linux for real, I recommend Debian, free (yes! free!) from www.linux-emporium.co.uk. It's not easy to set up though, so you'll need access to, well, us during the install process. I recommend you get a spare box you can access IRC with to find me/luke/SR so we can help you. A detailed list of your hardware is good too.
Doesn't Mandrake 8.2 have a book? :s meh, oh well it's probably has quite a good manual.
It's £35 on amazon.co.uk and was just wondering if that's a good price, or do you know of any other places where I could get it cheaper? Cheers.
Luke's server (io) is surprisingly busy actually. I was watching his Apache access log to get someone's IP (evil I am) and he was getting frequent requests.
However, he's going to mess about with traffic control soon to maximise bandwidth and reduce latency. Aren't you. Luke.

If that was aimed at me then yes please :D. I've been trying to look for a nice host that supports PHP but they are few and far between. They all say that they support it, but then when you actually upload, they appear not to support it.
My E-mail Addy is '[email protected]' if you need to contact me.
Thanks a lot.
Anyway.. er. Yeah. I pretty much give away accounts in my loft. Wasted bandwidth is bad :)
It's NTL's 512k cable offerings, 700/200kbit down/up in practice.

I don't cain the upload much. I can support 3 or 4 modem users simultaneously without any of them feeling a noticable slowdown, assuming I'm not doing something else at the time. Throw in a cable user leeching a DivX off it, though, and it tends to go downhill..
