Basically to win against some of the better players around, team work is going to be a major part in us lot winning. Unlike a number of others that will be just jumping into a team and doing whatever, we have the advantage of knowing eachother over this forum before we jump in. :-)
So I was thinking we split the team into 3 groups - Defence, Midfield and Attack.
Say we get to make an 8 player team, we could split the team into a 3,3,2 or 3,2,3 formation.
Obviously in a team deathmatch style game, this type of thing won't matter, but this is more for games such as capture the flag.
The Attack just concentrates on the main assault on the other team, stealing the flag, etc. The Defence protects our own base/flag with someone taking the role of a Centre Back who never leaves the base even if say the flag is stolen. This is because if the flag is recovered, the last thing you want is for another opposition player to just steal it again before the defence can reposition themselves.
Another Defence player will be a Running Back. If the flag is stolen, they will give chase to return it. The third defender will be a Reserve Running Back who will hold back a short distance behind the main Running Back so if they are killed, they can carry on chasing while the main Running Back returns into the game.
Then there is the Midfield. I thought of the nickname "Columns" for these players as they support both Attack and Defence. If an Attacker grabs the flag, they will give them support by fighting opposing team members to give the Attack that extra bit of time to get away. If The Defence is struggling from a lot of players advancing on them, the Columns will fall back more to protect them and leak less opposition through for the Defence to deal with. If an Attacker is killed while carrying the flag, Columns will finish the job by taking the flag back to base.
And similarly, if the Attack is having a hard time getting through a large defence, then the Columns will come forward more to strengthen the Attack.
In the case of playing a mode like Double Domination, the Defence will become a second attack group to take one zone with the main Attack taking the other. The Midfield will hang between these zones picking off as many of the opposition as possible.
If bigger teams are possible, then all we do is increase the numbers in each area. :-)
Hope that hasn't left you all confused. But thats my idea of how we can use team work to an advantage. Obviously who takes what position comes down to everyone being honest with themselves on their strong points and sticking to their roles. ;-)
If you tend to be good with your movement and make yourself a hard target to hit, then obviously an Attacking role will be very good for example.
I guess we can't say for sure right now what role we feel we should be in until we've played the game. But I can see me being more of a Column role.
By the way, in terms of communication - the three areas will tend to concentrate on communicating with their own group, only really talking with the others to warn them of dangers such as a captured flag. And then you'll want to refer to other groups as Defence, Midfield or Attack rather than individual players.
For example, the Attack might say "I've captured the flag, need support from Midfield" (or Columns).
Or while picking off players, a Midfield member might notice an enemy run through and say "Defence - target heading your way"
When it comes to talking with your own group, thats when you start using individual names. :-)
Anyway, feel free to slate the idea and stuff, but thats what I've put together in my head at work. ;-))
I'd have thought that it would be relatively simple by merely doing the "4 Xbox 16 player link" option over their network.
Blood Gulch and Sidewinder were designed for it!!!
And Sav you fool- Of course we wanna know about your Unreal champ Plans!
If the strategy of where to shoot the different mechs remains in this game, then it will outclass Unreal gameplay wise. But where Unreal has the strength in player numbers, thats where it is going to get more attention. Afterall, the shed loads of players to compete against and team up with is what online gaming is all about. :-)
I'm hoping a few of you get Mech Assault so I have some friendly partners on the game straight away. ;-))
As for Unreal Championship, I already have a team layout plan for that if anyone wants to hear about it. ;-))
