I don't think you should expect too much from games, they are difficult to programme, and you say that any old fool can make a game look good, well he'd need to be rich and be able to operate the high tech computors, my computer can't handle anything near a N64 game, if it did it would have cost alot, which then makes me go round in a circle, because my dad aint rich and he wouldn't have spent that much on a computor, hhmm, yeah I know what I mean.
I want good gameplay and lastability, if it doesn't hold a challenge for me and somethiong else to do except complete the set levels then it's not worth my money, whereas with Goldneye for a rare example('rare' not meaning the producer but it's a rare game because nothing on the N64 compares) it kept me on my console for around 3 years shooting innocent civilians and scientits grenades, it also had aa excellent multiplayer, not half as many functions as perfect dark but then I think they went a little crazy with the level design, my magazine said that someone completed Datadyne:extraction in under 1m42! huh??? not possible, my best is 1m50 and that took all day as was trying to get the cheat, just think I had better tell you while i'm on that subject, if you havn't got the cheat don't bother, it's not worth your time.
