I think you're getting confused here. FMV is when the game uses pre-recorded video sequences as movies - such as FFVIII. Metal Gear Solid does not use FMV, because it is using the game's 3D engine to produce the movies. This is called FMA (Full Motion Animation), and this is where the argument lies.
FMA is technically better, because it means you cannot distinguish between movies and game graphics - fine if your game has a superb 3D envionment, but games like Final Fantasy and Resident Evil have 3D characters on pre-rendered backdrops - meaning that it looks bloody amazing, but the camera cannot move because there is no 3D environment. This is where FMV (Full Motion Video) is used - it is simply a movie streaming off of the CD - you cannot interact with it because it is just a video running. FMV does, however, look far better, because it is created using super-powerful PCs. It does make the game engine look far worse than it actually is, though, which is why FMA is preferable if the programmers have the skill and good in-game graphics.
If this means nothing to you - sorry. I am getting a bit too technical for my own good here.
Anyway, on your point, I think you need movies to explain plots, because without them telling the story would be all but impossible.
jAKE :)
I think that FM as long as the company doesn't try to sell the game on it.
It can be great for plot setting but like Grix said, using it to boast a games graphics is wrong as it's completely lying causing gullible fools to buy useless games, wasting £40+ on them.
Otherwise, FMV is GREAT!
(This is message 90 I think)
Of course Crusader had some nice Video bits, but it is pretty old and has good reason for it (the alternative would be text and slow horrible messy things, owing mainly to it's perspective... or else you would get disoriented and try to be able to adapt to the new dimension and require an 8th dimension to maneuver in... possibly)
Well, it's good points are, it looks great, it's a good way to tell you what's going on in the game (like in MGS or Syphon Filter 2, where the characters talk and tell you what to do next), so it can be enjoyable and helpful, and some games are better with it. Well, I think MGS wouldn't have benn as good without FMV, where as WWF Smackdown's FMVs just bore you unless they're to do with you. Just one fault in almost floorless game.
It's bad points, well, as I said, it can bore you, if you're playing a game again then you keep having to skip it and it gets annoying, as well as not being what gaming is about.
So, overall, I think it can be good in some games, and in others...well, it's better without it.
Thanks for reading, Ant.
lets hope someone important reads this and decides to do it, instead of just talking abou it.
yup, carry on writting, it took me ages to get tto the end of this topic!! can't you lot start it again?? maybe you'll do it after it hits the big 100?

Jeez this is a long list.
I can't stand FMV on tv ads either!
