And this latest addition to the Dancing Bear Clan, Mr Pop Idol finalist Gareth Somethingorother has his song out.
And what is it?
"Unchained Melody"
Yup, a cover of a sacharinne sweet song that's already been a hit so you know it'll sell again to old people and retards.
So we have a pre-packaged pop robot (but he's so sweet! He overcame his stutter!) singing a gauranteed-hit.
*shakes head*
We are not living in the real world anymore folks, we are living in a pre-sold, pre-fab consumer-planet that has no desire for originality or daring.
It's yet another example of you being treated like a mindless baby, unable to form their own opinions about things.
And you'll all swallow this mush and ask for more.

Most 'discovered' artists don't magically fall into a deal. The same standards apply whether you're on tv or sending a demo tape to a company.. and trust me A&R people can be just as scathing anyone who's been on Pop Idol. Nowadays there just isn't the money to throw at any up coming artists that happen to look cool. You have to prove yourselves as much as any of those fools did on Pop Idol.
Whats hard about being on tv every goddamn week, and in every newspaper?! Whats hard about having stylists and professionals pandering to your every needs?! Whats hard about singing a song some other guy wrote for you?!
Kurt Cobain was still living in the back of his car even when Nevermind was at Number 1 in the billboard charts!
Their 15 mins has ended and now we can await Big Brother 3.
Please."

Both of these guys can sing very well. Of the two, I prefer Will Young, but both of them deserve success.
Gareth is very much a 'pop idol' character, but he does have a fantastic voice.
Will Young has an astounding voice - he is much better than the 'pop idol' tag suggests; he has a solid, powerful and very distinctive voice, and he can sing virtually any style of song.
Generally I agree with the 'anti-manufactured' vibe, but these people can sing. You can't 'manufacture' an individual; they've gone through more auditioning and voice training than any pub group, and I think they've earned the right to be where they are much moreso than any group picked off a pub stage because the record company scout likes their image or thinks they're 'cool' or 'the in thing'. They've probably had a harder time 'getting there' than any 'discovered' group or individual.
They got through only marginally on their appearance; mostly, they got through because they can sing, and sing bloody well. And they can both play piano, too.
Who cares whether they can/can't/have/haven't written their own stuff? The competition was about *singing*, and a hell of a lot of the greatest *singers* have never written their own stuff, or can play an instrument.
Yes, I like Will Young's single. Yes, I bought it. And yes, I will by his album too.
(Basically it was a comp to find the worst singer rather than the best)
It was utter cack, yet it will no dount sell and do really well. Yet Oasis are hardly manufactured, are they?
