And this latest addition to the Dancing Bear Clan, Mr Pop Idol finalist Gareth Somethingorother has his song out.
And what is it?
"Unchained Melody"
Yup, a cover of a sacharinne sweet song that's already been a hit so you know it'll sell again to old people and retards.
So we have a pre-packaged pop robot (but he's so sweet! He overcame his stutter!) singing a gauranteed-hit.
*shakes head*
We are not living in the real world anymore folks, we are living in a pre-sold, pre-fab consumer-planet that has no desire for originality or daring.
It's yet another example of you being treated like a mindless baby, unable to form their own opinions about things.
And you'll all swallow this mush and ask for more.

Thing is, on the other side of the building is a band or solo artist the record label really likes, and is the reason they started the business up in the first place, they're more than likely gonna flop if they get heard of in the first place, but the more popular robot pays for all the mistakes and balances the profits at the end of the day.
Thing is, all these pop stars make money, if they didn't then they wouldn't be there.
Can't believe Will sold around 1million singles! I hate his chin, not to mention it's a crap song, but he's got a good voice.
Havn't heard gareth's tune yet, but it seemed like his stutter was a fix, somehow he overcame it when he was in the final, weird, maybe thats why he didn't win, because the public who were originaly voting for him though "well hes not special anymore, infact hes got a crap voice"
also, who uys all this pop crap? pretty sure old people don't buy it, wouldn't know what a CD or tape was, young kids are usually the kulprits, but I wouldn't have thought there would be 1million of them in this country will £5 pocket money to spend on a single.
Guess there must be 1million idiots out there, weird.

True - but he still sings other people's words, which is the main criticism levelled at the likes of Will Young. He can play the piano, so there's no reason to think that he couldn't put some music together also.
Elton John's hits have mostly been written by Bernie

Taupin only wrote the lyrics. It was Elton who wrote the songs (i.e. the music). I personally listen to the music rather than the lyrics of a song, since most lyrics are just the same mindless garbage over and over again.

All of Meatloaf's hits have been written by Jim Steinman.
"He was an actor long before he became a singer and he met Jim Steinman, the songwriter behind those sweeping piano classics, when they were working on a musical together."
Elton John's hits have mostly been written by Bernie Taupin. http://www.livedaily.citysearch.com/artist/54.html
True, both Meatloaf and Elton can play instruments... but so can Will Young (piano).
Of course we have yet to hear any attempt at songwriting by Will Young, but that doesn't mean that he can't do it.
I only watched one or two "episodes" of Pop Idol, but I saw enough to see that the two finalists could definately sing, there's no argument there. So from that point of view I agree with Wookiee.
They have talent, they can sing. They sung live (which is something acts like Spice Girls, Steps etc hardly EVER do), and they've proved they've got the talent and can sing well.
However, I also agree with Craw when he says that there are bands out there that have just as much talent, and yet never get a chance to prove it.
*All* the pop idol people had to do was turn up and sing.
Yet some bands spend years going round and round the pubs and clubs, sending CD's off etc, and never get anywhere.
I think that some confusion has come from because of the words "artist" and "singer".
The people who appeared on Pop Idol were Singers, that is all. Though the finalists were damn fine ones.
Bands are artists, as they (normally) write their own stuff.
If you see what I mean?
I'm gald we have varying opinions on this topic, its a pleasure to see people actually caring about stuff and bothering to write well constructed arguments.
I have strong opinions regarding the music industry, and this is a quality forum to air them.
Whilst I agree that the only reason Pop Idol was made was to make a record company some easy money, it did give two very talented singers the chance to have their well-deserved chance in the limelight.
Having said this, Wookie using Elton and Meatloaf as examples of singers who use other people's lyrics is a bit skewed. Elton John is a singer/songwriter who writes damn good music as well as performs it. I'm not so sure about Meatloaf, but I think he writes his music too, making them both 'artists' rather than simply 'singers'.
it's just one of those tacky shows that make me just cringe at the thought like stars in there eyes and other such crappy tv with idiots singing pap shows.
luckly i have sky so i always had something good or better to watch than this trash.
what makes it worse is people brought the cack so now i gotta hear it at some point NOOOOOOOOOO
