Played them both, enjoyed them both.
But Splinter Cell takes MGS2 out behind the shed and spanks it's FMV bottom until it's bright red, then throws it away.

Why?
It's just more fun.
No stopping every 15 secs for a CODEC message from some manga-monkey to lecture us all about genetics and the evils of blah blah.
Nope, the occasional voice in head method of telling you where/why/when you should be going places.

"You can point your gun at the soldiers and they shake and give you their stuff" we all wah-wah about Solid Snake.
Big deal.
Splinter Cell you can interrogate them with a pistol against their head, stuff their big villain heads into scanners to open doors, club them unconscious with your gun or drop on them from the darkness.

Cut-Scenes.
*sigh* Hideo Kojima wants to be James Cameron. Ok, fair enough, good on you Kojima-San. But that means us having to sit through interminable cut-scenes of Goodfellas length whilst various characters reeled of expositional stuff worse than an Agatha Christie novel.
Splinter Cell?
Haven't seen one yet apart from the beginning.
It's just sneak/shoot/hide with no "And now we'll yank you from the game world to show off Kojima's really really poncy moralistic attitude on life"
Imagine a Japanese Jehova Witness coming to your door, you open it and have to stand there for upwards of 6 minutes while they drone at you.
Dull.

Remember that bit on the tanker when you got inside and that bloke's shadow fell across the aisle, the "oh no,he'll see you" element? Cool right? Yes. But only for that one section, apart from that you could bomb about in a Benny-rage and as long as you shot their radio it was all good.
Pah
Every single moment of Splinter Cell is not letting your shadow fall into view.

"Oooh, you can shoot ice-cubes"
Remember that? Kojima rubbing his trouser legs and talking about "real world mechanics"? The demo where we all shot the magazines and windows?
Hurrah! Except one you were out of the tanker, you didnt bother did you? You just snuck about and waded through cut-scene after cut-scene.
Not with Splinter Cell.
I've already grabbed a bloke for a human shield and proceeded to work my round a house shooting tvs, windows, cupboards, stereos, radios.
Then smashed him on the head and run away.

It's just a better game.
More involving,less movie-like (read: Boring) and the character isn't called "Solid Snake".
I mean come on, how cool can you be with a porno-man name?

So, the likes of GTA 3 and so on would have been around and played the way they do if the likes of Driver hadnt done the job? Or other games for that fact. You can hardly tell me that developers do not look at games that are similar to the ones they are making, and take ideas, add them to there game and improve on them. Its obvious Splinter Cell is similar to MGS2, and there is no reason to think this sort of thing happened here.

The game is newer than MGS2, there has been plenty of time to look on old ideas and revise them, its not all that hard to understand.

Sadly, it's not always the case. If it were, there would be no poor games by now.

I think i'll leave this alone.

Gamespot only gave it a 8.6 (compared with MGS2's 9.6)

And goatboy thought state of emergency was good :P

Of course Splinter Cell is going to be better than MGS2, MGS2 has been out for much longer, the developers of this game, like any other company, can look at other games, take parts from them games and come up with a game that improves upon it, its perfect logic.

If this game wasnt as good as MGS2, would you sit here saying that, slating the game? I wonder....

Not liking the game for the splint jump is unrealistic is so petty. You feel like daddy cool when you do it, flick on thermal vision(with the satisfying noise of course) and smoke the fool below you. Who cares if you can't do it in real life. Isn't that the appeal of games?

Split move aside, Splinter Cell is so much more realistic than MGS. The lighting is the best in any game-ever. Hiding in the shadows never gets boring and although the levels are liner, they're brilliantly designed. I want to go back and play through the eariler ones.

Wookie is right. Both are fantasic although I really am enjoying the no-noncence gameplay without the interuptions every 2 miuntes. Bit like the difference between Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Both are great and have different approches to the same genre.

At the moment, I prefere Splinter Cell.

About the splits jump - it is possible and very realistic how it is done. Fisher doesn't just jump up and do the splits. Look carefully how its done. You jump into the wall and get some extra height, from here, Fisher pushes his foot to the closest wall and then quickly extends his other leg to the other wall.

Its a case of using one wall first to get the initial footing, then throwing the other leg out to keep himself up. It would take a lot of leg strength to do it, but it is very possible. Jackie Chan does harder moves in his films without the aid of camera tricks which is why, along with having the guts to risk crippling himself in practically every scene he does, so many people respect the bloke.

i'm with Wookie. i think too people have said about the hallway jumping thing. i think it is possible. if you're someone like Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Vann Damn etc. and Sam Fisher is a physically fit bloke

You still should, MGS 2, whilst not as good in my opinion as SC, is still great for the plot thing if you have the time to sit down and take interest. Whatever anyone thinks about Kojima's ideas, not sure about moralistic by the way, they are still fresh and different to mainstream ideas. In a way it's far better a premis than Matrix.
