So if you had to chose between these two games, which would you pick? Going by peoples opinions on here, I'd guess 99.9% of the world would chose MGS2: Sons of Mediocrity (see what I did there?)

Now I know that almost everyone on here will start shouting at me for saying this, but I would pick Rez. I (finally) got round to buying my copy of OPSM2 yesturday, and I was looking forward to the MGS2 demo.

I hadn't played the first one, and I didn't have my PS2 when the demo was about first time round. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. You could say I only bought the magazine because of that demo.

I loaded it up, and sat through about half an hour of cartoon before I actually got round to playing the game. As you can probably guess, I wasn't impressed.

The camera angles were awkward, it never went through the controls with me, so I spent the first few minutes jumping about with my camera like some sort of Japanese tourist in London.

When I had finally got used to it, I wondered around, bored, until I found a door. That was pretty much the highlight of the game for me, because as soon as I went through it, some Jap rubbish came out of the TV speaker, and about 5 blokes starting shooting at me from nowhere.

I died.

I really couldn't be bothered to sit through the cut scenes again, as they were just too tedious. So I gave up.

Now, I admit that in the full game, the storyline may well be gripping, and that may well keep you going through the game. All I can say from my play of it is that I'm glad the Rez demo was on the DVD as well.

Rez is fantastic!

It's more of an experience than a game.

I'd seen video footage of it on previous months DVD's, and didn't think it looked much cop. However, on playing it I was immensly pleased that Sega hadn't let me down again. It's utter genious!

The way the sounds and graphics work together with your actions as you go through the game is astounding. I've never played anything like it in my life.

I'm not even going to begin to try to explain the game, for those that don't know, as it's pretty much undescribable. What it is, however, is a damn fine game. I'm so glad Sega are realisng it on PS2, just to show you lot that originality can still exist.

I know that pretty much everyone on here will shout at me when I sum up:

MGS2: I feel VERY let down.
Rez: A classic title that has just sneaked up on me, in the same way GTA3 did.

Despite loving the game, I totally agree with you Scott...

The game won't be anyone's cup of tea by a LONG way. You either see it as a boring, samey old skool shooter, or you take your time trying to advance the sound and graphics and interacting in more than just killing things...

It's like so many original titles- Jat Set, for example, to some was just a very simplistic game where you go round hitting button combos. To others it was a superbly crafted genius game that advanced graphics and the way people whould think about games. It got underpar sales, just as I think Rez will.

I see what you mean and it should be boring. Thinking of how simple it is, it really should be boring but for me, it just wasn't. Strange.

In my opinion i found Rez rather easy and boring.

"Planes come, lock on, destroyed, rainbow type thing box comes up, lock on, Max Power, Level 2"

Sorry about that but you get the picture i am trying to make, its just locking on a few planes, killing, seeing this rainbow type box thing and shooting it and your on the next level. I went up to about level 5 before i got bored and turned it off. I apprechiate some people may like this but its no my cup of tea shall we say.

Now onto MGS2, i found the opening cut-scene rather exciting and the sound effects was brilliant. I have MGS1 so i got use to the controls really quickly, this i thought was not dull and was a enjoyable gaming experience.

Ah, but that's like saying Mario64 is just a spiced up platformer. In fact, both games are far more than this.

At the core of Rez is the space harrier style gameplay- in fact, it's actually more similar to PLANET HARRIER: the as yet unreleased sequal to the aformentioned game that has lots of things in common with Rez- like the ability to lock onto multiple enemies.

However, this is only a very basic similarity- the whole way you play the game is different. In Rez the music and graphics used describe the way you're playing that game. It's hard to describe, but unlike normal games where the music gets "bad" when something bad is about to happen, the musi in Rez is two-way... it gets bad when a boss comes, but it gets good when you hit enemies... same with the graphics.

I have never played the first MGS (although I was supposed to be borrowing it today but the guy forgot it!) but I got on fine with the controls in MGS2. I have played through the demo quite a few times and now and absolutely love it. There are so many ways in which you can play it: just go through it normally with your gun; alert nobody and attack nobody; break everyone's neck. It's just brilliant.

Rez is good too although I can imagine it would get VERY boring. It's very simple which can be a good thing. Although I think it may be a bit too simple. I was impressed but it didn't really match up to MGS2.

The beginning cut scenes do take ages in MGS2 and when you're trying to load it again to play, it gets really annoying. "The Hudson River, 2 years ag-" SKIP!

I havnt pleyd mgs2 yet but i hav preordered it and i can not wait, how can you compare rez to this all time classic game, i loved the first mgs and i am sure i will love the 2nd. Rez is an ordinary game that may appear good but mgs2 has far greater depths that show up in the game, little touches that no other game had so stop trying to twist our minds by comparing a great title to a naff title!

True, True.

I played the MGS2 demo for a little while, hated it, came on here and slated it.

But then, after playing it for the 2nd/3rd time I came to love the game. As already said, the attention to detail is amazing. I love hiding in the lockers :) (although its a bit silly when a guard can actually see you going into a locker and then acts as if he has no idea where yo have gone...)

Anyway, great game...Rez may be original, but that doent instantly make it good.

Is it just me, or is Rez just a funked up Space Harrier? No bad thing in itself, but from the demo I don't think it is that original.
