Now I know that almost everyone on here will start shouting at me for saying this, but I would pick Rez. I (finally) got round to buying my copy of OPSM2 yesturday, and I was looking forward to the MGS2 demo.
I hadn't played the first one, and I didn't have my PS2 when the demo was about first time round. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. You could say I only bought the magazine because of that demo.
I loaded it up, and sat through about half an hour of cartoon before I actually got round to playing the game. As you can probably guess, I wasn't impressed.
The camera angles were awkward, it never went through the controls with me, so I spent the first few minutes jumping about with my camera like some sort of Japanese tourist in London.
When I had finally got used to it, I wondered around, bored, until I found a door. That was pretty much the highlight of the game for me, because as soon as I went through it, some Jap rubbish came out of the TV speaker, and about 5 blokes starting shooting at me from nowhere.
I died.
I really couldn't be bothered to sit through the cut scenes again, as they were just too tedious. So I gave up.
Now, I admit that in the full game, the storyline may well be gripping, and that may well keep you going through the game. All I can say from my play of it is that I'm glad the Rez demo was on the DVD as well.
Rez is fantastic!
It's more of an experience than a game.
I'd seen video footage of it on previous months DVD's, and didn't think it looked much cop. However, on playing it I was immensly pleased that Sega hadn't let me down again. It's utter genious!
The way the sounds and graphics work together with your actions as you go through the game is astounding. I've never played anything like it in my life.
I'm not even going to begin to try to explain the game, for those that don't know, as it's pretty much undescribable. What it is, however, is a damn fine game. I'm so glad Sega are realisng it on PS2, just to show you lot that originality can still exist.
I know that pretty much everyone on here will shout at me when I sum up:
MGS2: I feel VERY let down.
Rez: A classic title that has just sneaked up on me, in the same way GTA3 did.
Sega should just

Errrrm.....they did. Didn't they?

"Ooh, get us, we're Sega we make the pad buzz when you shhot stuff. Innovative, no? Hey the music changes too!!! We're great.
Yup, buzzy pad and changey music and only at the expense of decent visuals and interesting gameplay. We're number one."
Pah!
I agree with you that Rez is more of an experience than just a mere game. It's the kind of game that will stay in the memory for a long, long time.
I'm sure MGS2 will be just as special, but in different ways.
Having played Rez for the few weeks - mesmerized by the graphics, gameplay and sound - it's created a problem: all my other games seem less interesting somehow.... Rez has totally eclipsed them.
Yes there will be people who just don't get it, but that's fine. Some gamers just like to know what's going on, they like logical games, but Rez has a surreal quality that will appeal to some and leave others wondering what all the fuss is about.
The question is: after Rez, what do you play? It'll be a long time before anything as strange and wonderful as this appears again.
Beauty is not just in the visuals. The beuaty comes from the collective effects of the visuals, sound and vibrations. It all works together.

Fair enough.
But I would have thought that with the

Obviously not...
Beauty? We're talking Rez right? Ooh, 3-D stick men. Hardly what I would call beauty. It reminds me of a cross between starwars on the speccy and the aforementioned space harrier.
Art this ain't!
To me it makes absolutely no difference whether the games that I like are heralded as classics and sell in their millions or if I'm the only man on earth who bought it.
I play games for my enjoyment, screw everyone else!
Fair enough.

Well you haven't played MGS2 so you have no idea what you're talking about. Plus you bought Rez and then decided you didn't like it. Now who's blurting out? Buying a game which you don't even like. Pffff....
And when did I ever mouth Rez? I said it was good. In fact, who the hell are you even talking to?!

Ah, but that's like saying Mario64 is just a spiced up
> platformer.
No its not. Its like saying "Mario 64 is a spiced up version of a Mario game", which it is.
However, Mario 64 took the series into 3 dimensions etc...
Rez is like a funked up version of Space Harrier. Infact, thats the best description I've heard of it. Ok, theres some added weirdness in that the graphics and music improve when you're winning, but - while original - really isn't for everyone. Personally I hate computy music, so regardless of how many baddies I shoot, I still find it irritating. Graphics are not the be all and end all of games, thus I can still find Rez quite playable, but only in a Space Harrier type way.
Space Harrier rules, thus Rez is also favourable in a retro type way, but the so called "original" bits, I can go without.
Just my opinion of course. But personally I don't think that making the music and graphics alter in sync with the gameplay is a particularly fascinating addition to the gaming world. Yes its new, yes thayts why i fell its scored well.
A game that'll stand the test of time? I think maybe not.
TARRANT - You said: "Rez deserves better
> sales because I prefer it!" and "Rez is original so should sell
> better"
>Well, don't you want original games to sell better?
Why the hell should I care what other people buy? I'll buy what I like, simple as. If I buy something I don't like, I'll get rid of it. To me it makes absolutely no difference whether the games that I like are heralded as classics and sell in their millions or if I'm the only man on earth who bought it.

who are you speaking to? I openly said that I LOVE Rez. In my last post (which is one of many), I was just replying to someone who said that he didn't like it... saying that I could see why some people might not like it... but that doesn't include.
So, now who's blurting out... and who are you anyway?
