So if you had to chose between these two games, which would you pick? Going by peoples opinions on here, I'd guess 99.9% of the world would chose MGS2: Sons of Mediocrity (see what I did there?)

Now I know that almost everyone on here will start shouting at me for saying this, but I would pick Rez. I (finally) got round to buying my copy of OPSM2 yesturday, and I was looking forward to the MGS2 demo.

I hadn't played the first one, and I didn't have my PS2 when the demo was about first time round. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. You could say I only bought the magazine because of that demo.

I loaded it up, and sat through about half an hour of cartoon before I actually got round to playing the game. As you can probably guess, I wasn't impressed.

The camera angles were awkward, it never went through the controls with me, so I spent the first few minutes jumping about with my camera like some sort of Japanese tourist in London.

When I had finally got used to it, I wondered around, bored, until I found a door. That was pretty much the highlight of the game for me, because as soon as I went through it, some Jap rubbish came out of the TV speaker, and about 5 blokes starting shooting at me from nowhere.

I died.

I really couldn't be bothered to sit through the cut scenes again, as they were just too tedious. So I gave up.

Now, I admit that in the full game, the storyline may well be gripping, and that may well keep you going through the game. All I can say from my play of it is that I'm glad the Rez demo was on the DVD as well.

Rez is fantastic!

It's more of an experience than a game.

I'd seen video footage of it on previous months DVD's, and didn't think it looked much cop. However, on playing it I was immensly pleased that Sega hadn't let me down again. It's utter genious!

The way the sounds and graphics work together with your actions as you go through the game is astounding. I've never played anything like it in my life.

I'm not even going to begin to try to explain the game, for those that don't know, as it's pretty much undescribable. What it is, however, is a damn fine game. I'm so glad Sega are realisng it on PS2, just to show you lot that originality can still exist.

I know that pretty much everyone on here will shout at me when I sum up:

MGS2: I feel VERY let down.
Rez: A classic title that has just sneaked up on me, in the same way GTA3 did.

How are you doing on it anyway? You mentioned it gets a lot more difficult.

It's true that Rez has simple gameplay, but it's the way the graphics, sound, music and controller vibrations combine that makes it a joy to play. That's why I like it, but if you don't then that's fine. It's most definately not for everyone.

I'm more pedantic than that. You mean the fourth:

Metal Gear
Metal Gear: Snakes Revenge
Metal Gear: Solid Snake (Japan only)
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid 2

See. ;-)

I agree with what YH is saying in his initial post though, from the demo's I was more impressed with Rez, because it was different. MGS2 was alright, but took itself way too seriously, and you're always being pushed in the direction of a pre-defined story. I skipped the cut-scenes, because I simply wasn't interested, I wanted to play a game. It was fun when I was allowed to do so.

And Rez has taken the basics and moved it on.

Old skool shoot-em-ups are your favourite genre and you don't like Rez? I am confused.... Surely you've got it wrong?
What was on the PS2 demo - Area 1? Well that's the easiest level. The other Areas are more challenging.

SONICRAV - There's a Space Harrier sequel in the pipeline? What platform(s)? I'm intrigued.

All I was trying to say is that

a) Rez doesn't do anything for me. I really wanted it to, but the demo just seemed very simplistic. And it's not a case of 'not getting it'. I appreciate what SEGA have tried to do, but I don't think there is enough gameplay there. I loved old school shoot em ups (R-Type, Terra Cresta, and even the aforementioned Space Harrier, to name just three). In fact I'd go as far to say that they were possibly my favourite genre. But that was ten to fifteen years ago. I think any attempt to introduce originality into games should be applauded. Even if the attempts fail. And they are not just hollow words. I picked up Fantavision at the launch of the PS2, another game praised for it's originality. Though you could say that all it is, is Bust a Move with fireworks. What let that game down was lack of longevity. But at least there was an intention there to introduce originality, as there is with Rez.

b) It's not as original as I keep hearing. It's a post millenial Space Harrier. And as for the music changing depending on how you're doing, that's nothing new either. The SSXs also do that. Visually, it does look different to what else is around, though I wouldn't say the graphics are amazing.

Basically, it's not what I hoped it would be.

Yeah, but they should have JUST released it on DC. PS2 owners just can't appriciate the subtlties of a classic such as Rez.
