The "Sony Games" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
The insides have also been re-designed to allow for an internal HD/modem add-on, as opposed to external units in Japan.
Also, much is made of the 'lack' of anti-aliasing on PS2; however, the machine DOES support anti-aliasing. If software publishers choose not to use it, or can't be bothered to figure out how to, you can hardly blame it on the machine or Sony.
Hardware-wise, the PS2 shifts (I think) 7 times the polys of DC.
Also, Parr... your DC comparison...
- Doesn't need to be chipped just get a bootdisk (Chipping f's up the ps2
Chipping risks F'ing up any machine, and why bother when imports are more expensive and full of Jap text? No worry for me here...
- Better games that are cheaper
Depends on your taste, but it's personal opinion. Personally, the games I want are on PS/PS2 - if they were on DC or N64, I'd buy one.
- GD-rom
Eh? The only relevance here is capacity, and DVD wins hands down. GD-ROM is 1Gb I think? Up to 7Gb on DVD.
- Small
And PS2 is huge, is it?
- looks better than a ps2
Looks suspiciously like an inflated PS1 though, doesn't it? Imitation is the sincerest for of flattery.
- 4 controller sockets at the front not 2 at the back in a stupid fasion
Err - PS2 controllers plug in the front, mate! Try looking at the pictures! 2 or 4 controllers - to me - is irrelevant - Few games support more than 2 players, and I can always buy a multi-tap or two and have up to eight!
- Better internet connection
An internet connection is an internet connection; if you want "the best", get a PC. As no-one has yet seen the Sony internet set-up or capabilities, how can you claim that?
- Better memory cards
A memory card is a memory card to me. I don't want a screen on it, it's for storing game saves.
- Better name I mean who thought up Playstation 2 (clever)
Probably the same person who thought up that wonderful DC logo! Why change a name that's already known by millions as the best in console gaming?
- Memory cards can be used on Arcade Machines
Well, woo-bloody-hoo! PlayStation memory cards can be used in arcade machines too - mostly things like Dance Dance Revolution. Again, Sega are behind the times.
- Original controller not the same as the saturn
Well, you got me there. But the the original PS controller is so good, it doesn't really need to be changed. Analogue buttons all round is about the only improvment they could make.

The DC is fully 128bit. It has an Hitachi 128bit CPU with a NEC VR2 graphics chip. Where the hell did you read that it had a 32bit processor??? The PS2 may be more 'powerful' but where are the games that show this? Don't say MGS2 as that's not out till 2002 and by then we'll have X-box and GameCube to compare it too.
The DVD playback (from what I've read on multiformat and Sony sites) is very poor. It skips, jumps, it has a grainy picture and won't play some titles. It's major downfall is that it's using software to do the decoding - a £150 Matsui player from Dixons uses hardware to decode and so the quality is far superior. Buying a PS2 for DVD playback is a really stupid thing to do. And when you get one you'll no doubt realise this.
Possibly the DVD playback and controls will be improved for the european release, but I don't know. Oh, and it's going to be cheaper in the rest of europe because of tax, Spain and Germany are always good places to buy hardware from.
> why the Dreamcast is better? PS2 is more powerful, quicker, looks
> better and has a built in DVD player.
Hmmm, can't say I agree with you there, the PS2 kinda reminds me of a cheap plastic radiator.
Isn't the games what matter? If that's the case, then the Dreamcast has the PS2 by the short and curlies as far as I'm concerned.
Timesplitters looks fantastic tho'! Waiting for a US machine instead though. PAL? Hah! Region 2? I think not. But the DVD doesn't concern me since I've already got a multi-region player.
Bleeders
PS The person who wrote this, would they please write and tell me why the Dreamcast is better? PS2 is more powerful, quicker, looks better and has a built in DVD player, so please just tell me why DC is better!
