Censors ban 'brutal' video game

British censors have banned a violent video game from the UK for the first time in a decade.

The video game Manhunt 2 was banned for its "unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying", the British Board of Film Classification said.

It means the Manhunt sequel cannot be legally supplied anywhere in the UK.

The parents of a Leicester schoolboy who blamed the original game for the murder of their 14-year-old son said they were "absolutely elated".

I've not played the first, but I think my brother did. Anything that gets a ban by the BBFC (is this a film or a game? BBF&GC :S) is a game I have to play!

I cried a little river of tears, but then I restarted it and everyone was alive again so it turned out ok.

Oh dear, and an adults only rating in America, apparently that's like receiving the kiss of death as major retailers like Wal-Mart won't sell your game.

MWAH!

I do see their (the BBFC's) point about it, but it just reminds me of the early days of video nasties, where all the stores had to keep them in dingy lit back areas and cover them up, and we're talking about standard 18 horror fare, not porn.

Until some serious independent research is done on the effects and the results are recognised, things won't really change either way. A small handful of games will be banned, others criticised in the press and nothing will change.

I remember back on the ZX Spectrum, some organization or other wanted to ban Bram Stocker's Dracula from being released - it was declined & not even certified as there were no moving images in a graphical adventure (back then).

The marketing wheels will no doubt get set in motion & the game will come back to the headlines in a positive light - the more publicity, the more sales...

I thought the same as Nin about the original Manhunt. The whole feel and context of the game was quite disturbing, so Im not surprised the new one has been banned. Ive got no problem with violence in games as a rule but the overall setting of the Manhunt games makes it too sadistic and I dont think its the sort of thing that should be used as entertainment.

To be fair, the orginal Manhunt is the only game i've played and thought "This is a bit much, maybe the censors have a point". It was grim and to some extent it did train you to think like a killer as you couldnt just run around massacring people as in GTA, it required patience and stalking.
After a while you realise that it is an 18 certificate and if the law could be upheld then it shouldnt be a problem. As always though, thats not the case as proven by that boy of 13 who was murdered and whose parents then had the nerve to blame the game they bought for him.
I cant remember whether it came out on the PSOne or PS2 but i'd expect it to be even more vicious and viceral this time. Maybe thats censors issue with it. Either way i expect this decision to be overruled on appeal, unless there is something ridiculously bad in it.

Going back to Manhunt 2:

Apparently the game was already banned in Ireland, Australia are more strict than the UK so there's little hope of a PAL import there. If it's available anywhere in europe then you might be best off ordering it from that countries branch of Amazon.

It's bound to top the charts in Germany though!
