Censors ban 'brutal' video game

British censors have banned a violent video game from the UK for the first time in a decade.

The video game Manhunt 2 was banned for its "unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying", the British Board of Film Classification said.

It means the Manhunt sequel cannot be legally supplied anywhere in the UK.

The parents of a Leicester schoolboy who blamed the original game for the murder of their 14-year-old son said they were "absolutely elated".

I've not played the first, but I think my brother did. Anything that gets a ban by the BBFC (is this a film or a game? BBF&GC :S) is a game I have to play!

Yeah. It got changed so the people were zombies and the blood was green.

Ive just watched a few Manhunt 2 trailers and it looks a lot better than the first one, gameplay wise.

I think so, yes. When you start to find things like that funny, thats when the censors start to panic. The blood effects were pretty crap though.

Those blood effects were cheap, anyone else find parts of that more funny than disturbing? Homerunnn!

I'm one of the reasons this game is banned aren't I? :|

This perfectly illustrates my point
There's little comparison between this and Hitman in terms of violence.
And stating the obvious but the above link contains extreme violence.

Splinter Cell and Manhunt are two entirely different games in the way theyre presented. SC and Hitman while violent are cartonish and quite clean and clinical. Manhunt is just plain nasty.

Comes down to presentation. 80's graphics couldnt show you anything disturbing.

I agree with that. An 18 certificate should be enough

Once again, presentation. The level of detail in the violence in Manhunt goes way beyond any other game.

I was about to post about that. click here

That's definitely not right. The whole James Bulger story was horrific and using an image of it in a game is way out of line.

Games have been in the news a lot lately, there was that one that used the church or whatever in Manchester and something about a game that had footage of that boy being led off. Which by the way I found really disturbing. Why would two young boys just take a kid and then kill him :S I never had a desire to kill people when I was 10.

Im not against violent games. After all, they are just games. As Alfonse pointed out, you dont feel sorry for the dead games characters. Manhunt, however, had a completely different vibe to other games that Ive played. It felt a lot more depraved and it actively rewarded you the more extreme you became.

Aka Splinter Cell.

Which is daft as the game's based upon those weird 'hunt the homeless' action movies that were around in the late 80's and early nineties. Infact Running Man's probably an influence.

It's a pathetic ruling. Something like Splinter Cell allows you to go around stabbing an awful lot of people in a frenzy on the easier settings and only the context is different although they have pushed Fisher further and further from playing by the rules.

And what about Hitman: Blood money? Don't care about civilian casualties? Mow 'em all down! Senselessly killing children with crowbars in Deus Ex: Invisible War? Oh that's fine too. Marrying several wives and lopping their heads off? Clearly Fable should be banned.

etc etc.
