Right, sorry for the delay on judging this one but we've had a bit of a mad Christmas and New Year so it was for your own good. Not quite so many entries for this (to be honest, it was quite a tricky one) and a fair few of you missed the point entirely - the idea was to get people to join the club, not to get them to Gameaday!

Anyway, from the entries we did receive, Dr.Duck wins for his in-depth look at the logistics of the chain e-mail and The Game wins for his 'matey' writing style. Well done both of you! You can both choose a Game or DVD from our database up to the value of £25!

-----------------------------------------------------

It's time we got up to some mischief.

What we need is a Chain e-mail letter. One of those things which arrives at your address and then you forward it to thirty six of your mates and two weeks later a freebie arrives through your letterbox.

Imagine that for each new member who joins Special Reserve we have a couple of quid to pay for rewards.

THE ORIGINATOR send the e-mail to 10 friends.
The ten friends can either JOIN or PASS.
To PASS they must send the e-mail on to another 10 friends, but just as favour to the ORIGINATOR.

If they JOIN then they can become an ORIGINATOR and send off their own e-mail to 10 friends.

With luck one originator will get their message across to quite a lot of people - especially if the message is interesting or humorous enough for people to pass on.

For each person who joins, we send the originator a £2 voucher towards games and stuff.

(the above is just a simple first stab at this to suggest the possibilities)

This contest is two-fold.

You can win one EXTRA GAMEADAY if you can specify exactly the right way to go about this. Something very similar to the above, but well thought out. An idea which will work.

You can win one EXTRA GAMEADAY if you can write the e-mail for the scheme you outline, or for the scheme outlined above. The important things are to make people join and to be interesting enough to pass the e-mail on.

Competition closes in Mid December.

It's a bit complex to write out your answers and ideas in this thread quite carefully and we'll see who comes up with the best concepts and approaches to this.

Quite a challenge - I wonder if anybody will enter?

I just wrote loads, and the 'foul language' thing thought a backside was offensive and so I clicked back and it erased my whole text. So here I go again, but with no mention of back-sides!!!

A message saying 'Join SR! NOW!' will join the trash can along with 'free xxx babes', 'Cheap viagra!', 'Are you lonely tonight', 'lose weight fast' etc. etc. I.e. annoying spam.

Surely it will also lower the reputation of SR if you ask everyone to send various attempts at spam across the uk with SR on it? I know I'd get annoyed with SR. It is very unlikely that people will bother to pee their friends off by forwarding an advert anyway.

The good chain mails have jokes, pictures or video, and are funny. Combine your spam with this and it might get passed around the net. What do you think?

Part 1: How you’d do the administration:
Possible methods, depending on what could be done (alter the details of the second part to fit the method selected from the first part):

a) Everyone who forwards the e-mail to someone who consequently joins gets a 1 pound voucher.
Everyone who forward the e-mail to someone who then forwards it to a third person who joins, gets a 1 pound voucher.
Thus for every person who joins, you trace the e-mail to the person who sent it to them (person 2), and the person who sent it to person 2. They both get 1 pound vouchers.

How to trace it? If it’s possible, I’m sure your employees can work out how. Maybe a link to the membership form to join in the e-mail, which also sends the necessary information of tracing the e-mail. Maybe and e-mail tracking program. Whatever, but if it can’t be done, see the next alternative.

b) Everyone who forwards the e-mail to someone who joins gets a 2 pound discount voucher. This would presumably be far easier to trace, and even if you didn’t want to/couldn’t put a tracer on the e-mail, when someone joined, you could ask them for the e-mail of the person who send them the forwarded message about the site. Far less hassle.

- The advantages of the first way are that by having two people getting 1 pound vouchers, everyone has the potential to make more money, in magical pyramid style, but you still have to give out just 2 pounds in vouchers, like your original suggestion in the post that started this thread.
In giving out one 2 pound voucher, if someone referred 10 friends who joined, they could get 20 pounds in vouchers. If someone referred 10 friends, and they all referred another 10 friends, they could get 110 pounds. Looks much more impressive, but doesn’t cost you any more.

By having the money go to the people forwarding the e-mail, instead of the initiators (as in the original suggestion), you give people more incentive to forward the e-mail, since they get vouchers for forwarding it, instead of doing it as a favour, and all the people, if they do forward it and get voucher entitlement, they then have an even bigger incentive to join themselves, since they have the vouchers waiting for them when they join.

Voucher distribution – whenever someone joined, and gave entitlement to a voucher to someone, you could add that voucher to their personal tally, and send an (automated) e-mail informing them of the new total number of vouchers and total discount available to them.
In sending the vouchers out, you could send the first batch with their membership pack when they joined, and then send them any more they earned at the same time as you sent them a product they ordered, or with a magazine.
Thus you wouldn’t be paying any postage to get the vouchers distributed that you wouldn’t be paying anyway.
Alternatively, you could send them out whenever a certain number were accumulated. Ie, if someone had 5 vouchers, send them all out.
You could, of course, send each out individually, but at second class post, its 18p per voucher. A pretty high cost, proportionally.
The big advantage of sending them out when a certain number was reached is that you would need to ask for the address of non-members, and so could then send them junk ma… promotional matterial.
I’d suggest, send the vouchers out with every other thing posted to the person, orders or catalogues, and also send non-members their first voucher, and then every 3 vouchers after that if they hadn’t yet joined, getting their address on file when requested for where to send the first voucher. And send some promotional stuff with each batch of vouchers.

Part 2: How the e-mail would work:
The e-mail would be sent from one person to everyone they knew, and they would all send it on, and so on.
It would thus be coming from someone they know, and are immediately unlikely to delete it without reading it first.

Saving the fact that it’s actually a chainmail for the end will hopefully get them intruiged before the inevitable negative effect of ‘it’s being sent to me for the benefit of the person who sent it, delete it’

By avoiding giving example prices, it means that it will still be relevant and up to date if it is still circulating a long time in the future, as you mentioned.

Here’s how it goes:

Subject: Mate, we can both fleece this place, for real.

Content:

Hi, how are you?
Just needed to get this to you:
You know those cheap internet shops? It’s one of those, but they have a promotion going that we can both get a lot from.

The place is www.specialreserve.net – they’re a UK site selling video games, dvds, pc hardware and software, mobile phones, that kind of thing. They’re a lot cheaper than most anywhere else, especially on the highstreet.

You don’t have to join, but when you do, you can get a free gift that’s worth more than the membership price anyway, and if you don’t join, they’ll charge you a little bit more, so it’s probably best if you do join them.
The membership prices and free gifts are on the end of .

Also, they have a bunch of chat forums on the web site, and they actually give away 2 games and a free dvd every day, you chose the game or film that you want from pretty much the whole catalogue.
The chatforums are at this address: www.ukchatforums.reserve.co.uk

Okay, here’s the best thing, this is where we take them to the cleaners!:

They have a promotion going where for every person you get to join the club, you get a 1 pound voucher to spend at their store, and what’s more, for every person they get to join, you get another 1 pound voucher (so does the person that you got to join).
All you have to do is send them this e-mail, and if they join, you get the voucher.
Plus, if they then send the e-mail to someone else who joins, you get another voucher.
There isn’t even any limit to how many vouchers you can get.

Think about it, if you send it to 10 people who join, that’s 10 pounds in vouchers, and if they all send it to 10 more people who join, another (10x10) 100 vouchers, you get 110 pounds of vouchers to spend at this place, just for forwarding this to10 people.

And It’s Acutually For Real!

Me? I’ve sent this to you because I thought you might want to join. If you do, I get a voucher. Maybe more importantly, for everyone you send this on to who joins, you get a 1 pound voucher, and I do too. So even if you don’t want to join, would you do me a favour, and send this to a few people? I’d appreciate it a lot. Then if you do ever decide to join, you can always get them to send you your vouchers at another time.

They have a promotion going where for every person you get to join the club, they give you a 2 pound voucher to spend with them. You can do it as many times as you want, if you sent it to 10 people who joined, it’s 20 pounds for you to spend with them. When they say ‘get to join the club’, in fact, all you have to do is send them this e-mail. So you take 2 minutes to forward this to some people you know, and for every one who joins, you get a 2 pound voucher. 10 people = 20 pounds.
(Just like I get my 2 pound voucher if you join ; ) )

And It’s Actually For Real!

Anyway, you’ve seen all the info, so go, forward this thing on, and get vast amounts of vouchers, and then join Special Reserve now – get those special offers (and get me my voucher!)

Anyway, see you later,
enjoy www.specialreserve.net !

No humour in that last one because I couldn't think of how to include it. I'd recommend it wherever possible though.

No one really likes chain email. The thing your chainemail has to do is get someones attention.

Humour is always a good idea. If I read something and it's funny I may read it all the way to the end. If it's not funny and is trying to make me buy something I'd delete it straight away.

A friendly, funny approach would be a great way to get my attention.

-----
Subject: Hey mate. Thought you might be interested in this.. << the subject makes me think this person knows me so I read it. If it says "Save 50% on games" or soemthing like that I will delete it. If you fail to get someone inside the message it doesn't matter what it says inside the letter you will have failed before you started. If you know the customers name this would be even better.

Hey mate.
I heard you were into games. I found this cool site where you can WIN games and WIN DVDs. I couldn't believe it!

*(enthusiam is always good)*

Anyway I was surfing the web and found this site www.gameaday.co.uk. I wasn't sure about gameaday.co.uk at first as it looked a bit dodgy. But I went on the chat forums at "ukchatforums.com" and got talking to people who had won and it is so easy.

*(repeat gameaday.co.uk to drill it into the readers mind. Whenever I read an email I always think it's a catch or dodgy. Proof of what you are saying is vital. Invitation to ukchatforums is vital)*

Anyway I posted a few reviews, wrote a few discussions and after about 2 weeks I found my name on gameaday.co.uk/winners1.php. It was great! So I choose the game of my choice and it came under a week. A free game!

But thats not all. I was surfing the site and found some quite cheap games. Championship Manager 2001/2002 ONLY £21. Wolfenstein only £26. I got the games yesterday and they were great you should get them.

Just thought you would be interested. Catch you later mate. Tell your friends too I think they would like to know about this site.

Using persasive action:

This christmas, are you going around, wondering why you cant get other people christmas presents while thay are getting you one? Or are you wondering why you cant spend much on your self? Or are you spending too much on your pet/fake monkeys?

Well, now you too can earn more money. By simply forwarding this letter to lots of differnt people, you can be in line for a big return are a certain time. The more people that recieve and join the system, the more money you earn. Its that simple. So for doing nothing you can get mega bucks, especially if you have a lot of e-mail addresses.

So, do you know anyone in need of a christmas boost? Do you want to spend more on your moneys, or on your kids this christmas? In order to, forward this e-mail to as many people as possible.

Money, money, money
must be funny
in a rich mans world

By the way, doesnt DBZ rule?
