Ok, my list is in no particular order and this list is about picking your favourites - as in their looks and general abilities in battles. So don't go thinking you have to pick 10 that would make a well balanced - they can be all fire types if your favourites tend to all be that type. :-)
Anyway, heres mine (some of you might not know some of these as they're in Sapphire and Ruby)...
01. Pikachu
02. Steelix
03. Aggron
04. Kyogre
05. Lugia
06. HellHound (name right ? basically the one that looks like a doberman in gold and silver)
07. Charizard
08. Duskull
09. Tropius
10. Arbok

I wouldn't mind if it was just until you completed the game for the first time (keeps it challenging), but after training my older teams to L100, I'd want to be able to use them in the new game, with the new rules and graphics and stuff.
It was great being able to see my first team in full colour when I brought them to Gold, and it was good giving them new moves (Gengar FINALLY got a proper Ghost move and Dragonite FINALLY got a proper Dragon move!).
If they let old Pokémon fight in the new Gamecube stadium game, that won't be so bad...
I really hate those damn HM moves though, they're all so crap, and you have to replace one or more of your team with something crap that you've loaded them all onto.
Although I can appreciate the need to restrict movement around the world until certain things have been done.
Thats also another one that has gone. Fortunatly Bellsprout is no more. But on the other hand, Oddish, Zubat and Goldeen are all in. :-(
I caught a Goldeen and I just use it as a workhorse - giving it the moves surf, waterfall and dive so that I can get around the ocean easily.
Theres some great new Pokemon, but there are a number of crappy ones too that'll just end up rotting in the PC.
Just remembered :D
They should ahve taken out the crap ones from the original, like Goldeen and Bellsprout.
Theres always room for a Charizard in my team. ;-)
As for a Pokemon count, now that we're on Sapphire and Ruby, the count has actually come down thanks to Nintendo leaving out a whole bunch of the old ones. I make the final number down to 200. :-(
I don't think I'll ruin anything by saying this, but I'm pretty bloody annoyed that some of my all time favourites such as Steelix are gone while the likes of Zubat and Oddish are still in - argh !
Maybe things will be put right and the GC game will allow you to grab all the old ones that have been left out and download them onto your Sapphire/Ruby game. Afterall, Nintendo were able to give you Mew and Celebi in this way so I'm guessing it could be done.
