Cannon Fodder was released many years ago a major uproar occurred especially with the subheading being: War has never been so much fun (this game has been recently re-released on the Gameboy Color). Who was to know that 20 years down the line weíd be playing a game where you play a man who steals peopleís cars and randomly beating up and shooting innocent pedestrians? The above might (and should) seem very disturbing to you but some of you will remember killing someone in Perfect Dark, one of the guards who had given up, shaking in fear pleading for you not to hurt him and as you force a bullet into their head theyíll scream ìI donít want to dieî as they fall to the floor.

But Realism is increasing, Star Wars games such as Rogue Leader and Obi Wan are starting to finally look like itís film counterparts, GT3 is extremely close to real life driving it is unbelievable. Soon weíll be able to see the look on someoneís face as we extinguish his/her life, we might see tears roll down the cheeks of a dying victim. Could realism go to far?

Is this the future?

Dringo.

Think thats more a question for the individual playing the game. If it gets so realistic then where is the difference in doing it in a game or in real life (ok so with the latter nobody gets hurt its just pixels making up an image) but surely the emotions the person goes through before doing it will be similar. I for one don't like the idea of chasing little girls and killing them, not now in real life, not in games in the future and not even in games no. It just dosn't seem right, kind of thing that could mess up a persons head.

Here's another question?

Is it ok for a game to allow you to chase a little girl and kill her?

LEts say gaming has reached a pinacle of realism, you can see the pain in her eyes the tears on her cheek... does it matter?

Yes but could we soon be killing little girls and watch them choke on their own blood as they try and scream for mummy?

When is too far, will games just become more and more graphic and realistic?

Is this what the future of gaming is all about?

Will we not only play things we love realistically but watch painfully as a small child gets smashed to death by a hammer? Will we still enjoy games at this point?

Is this the true horror of realism?

I don't think it has gone over them but it does stretch them very close to the limits. Remember such games get an 18 rating and from that you have to realise if you are younger than that and the game effects you in some way then its not the developers fault and to find a fault you have to look closer to home (how they got the game, who let them play it, etc)
Some games will always be controversial, but the industry wouldn't be the same without it, Imagine if games like GTA3, resident evil, goldeneye, doom were not allowed, loads of fun games and genres wouldn't exist and the industry definately wouldn't be as popular.

its the immediate future we should really think about but just have the idea in the back of your mind as u run down another pedestrian has gaming stepped over the boundaries?

A thought very similar to this hit me earlier on today. I sat in a lecture hall listening to one of my computing lecturers. He is one of the most knowledgeable people that I have ever met and has such good knowledge on a wide range of subjects. He started to talk about how things were 20 years ago and just how far things have came. Things like size and cost of RAM and other hardware and software components.
This got me thinking about the games industry, what's it going to be like in say 20 years time. Experts say that in 20 years time an average desktop computer will have the processing ability of all the computers in silicon valley combined. Imagine what the consoles will be like then. Most of you probably already know that gaming consoles are some of the most complex and advanced systems available to buy so with the future we may see a lot of things that nowadays seem impossible.

Which brings me to the point of realism. It only seems normal that as time goes by that games will become more realistic, soon maybe so realistic that it is hard to tell the difference between a game and say a tv programme. But would this really change games for the better? Just because the graphics are ace doesn't mean it will still be fun to play or even feel right. By that I mean how many of us would actually feel happy with sticking the knife into someone when it feels that realistic? I for one don't know, just doesn't seem that much fun.

Also the more realistic a game gets, if it is violent then there will be a greater chance it will get criticised and may even never get released as the content would be to unfit for most to deal with. A lot of you may disagree with me and in a way I disagree, I have strong beliefs that it is down to the individual playing the games, people have to realise it is only a game and don't believe everything you see. But I still get the feeling that as games become more realistic the content may also be adjusted to fit in to society's image of a decent content. I guess there are certain things (probably loads) which should never ever be seen or allowed to do in games which will probably mean games will never ever become truly realistic. Things like killing children, child abuse, seriously gorey images and scenes, I guess anything which isn't really accepted in society as being right (ok I know murder, stealing and that are wrong but don't seem as sick as something like child abuse etc)

I guess that is a kind of negative view so I should try find something positive to say. Ok, it is not only realism that will improve, graphics, gameplay, controls, physics and gaming engines should all get better with time as new (better) ways of doing things and creating games are sure to come along and the better hardware will be used as best it can.

Which brings me to my last point (I can hear the crys of "Thank God for that") Will we ever reach a limit to how games are made? I mean will games reach a certain standard then always remain at this standard and never get better? Is such a thing possible? I'm not sure if it is, surely everything can be made better in some way. But who knows what the future has in toll for us, guess we will just have to wait and see.

Holy shmuck - that's scary...!

Very absorbing piece though - maybe you should be an author...

Dringo Vs Ant... :D

Still - I think games will go to far, and that's why I'm sticking with Nintendo... Mario will never 'go too far'... I might even have to give up on some Rare games, but hey... Mario is Mario!
