Cannon Fodder was released many years ago a major uproar occurred especially with the subheading being: War has never been so much fun (this game has been recently re-released on the Gameboy Color). Who was to know that 20 years down the line weíd be playing a game where you play a man who steals peopleís cars and randomly beating up and shooting innocent pedestrians? The above might (and should) seem very disturbing to you but some of you will remember killing someone in Perfect Dark, one of the guards who had given up, shaking in fear pleading for you not to hurt him and as you force a bullet into their head theyíll scream ìI donít want to dieî as they fall to the floor.

But Realism is increasing, Star Wars games such as Rogue Leader and Obi Wan are starting to finally look like itís film counterparts, GT3 is extremely close to real life driving it is unbelievable. Soon weíll be able to see the look on someoneís face as we extinguish his/her life, we might see tears roll down the cheeks of a dying victim. Could realism go to far?

Is this the future?

Dringo.

I dont think 'official' censorship is important here... more social (read Sun/Mirror/etc... Newpaper) morality...

Its less important that some 16 year old kid managed to watch a 18 rated movie...

When... for example... was the last time you bought a snuff video?

They are avalible... but they arnt really, enjoyed in mass consumption...

Like I said... there will be the odd game that attempts to be released that portrays extrame violence...

Though by the time realism becomes a real issue (and really, we are a long way off yet), they will either not be generally released... or wont be a desirable purchase for the majority of people... given the cocst of writing competitenct software at its currentl level of sophistication, its hard to see why anyone would spend the money on developing something that would fail on returns...

The biggest danger facing us is, almost the complete opposite, that games become either Disney cute, safe, and innofensive, or or bland, mediocre photocopies of each other... especially since this direction can be seen to be happeneing already in the industry?

Besides, I expect gameing, as we enjoy it today, will be little more than a memory... something for them younguns to mock us for wasting our time doing? :)

"Say another word and I'll slap you" seems to work well though. As does "Turn off the phone or I'll insert it in you."

In my view censorship dosen't work at all. Well, how many of us have seen a good game say an 18 and waited until we were 18 to buy it?

Nobody.

We ask parents or try and buy it ourselfs. I bought DF2 the other week and im underage but bought it with no problems. Ok ok, they stick an 18 sticker on it? So what? What the hell does that do? turn into a copper as soon as you get home and arrest you? No thought as much.

So, no censorship does not work.

I suppose a graphic description of a 5 year old girl getting killed isn't exactly material for these forums but this act in turn makes my point seem more emphasized.

Censorship does work. But for how long?
