Nintendo have made such bad errors of marketing in the past two years that in the next few months its going to hit them hard. The death of the Gamecube will be at the end of this year; after the swan song of Mario Kart. It won't last any longer and fans who believe what Nintendo said about a six year lifetime for the GameCube were merely cheating themselves.

Nintendo are the company I have enjoyed products from since I was three years old. I thank Nintendo for creating games which allowed me to escape from the years of personal crap I have had to deal with. I really support the GameCube and personally favour it from the surrounding rival hardware yet nobody but Nintendo can be blamed for allowing the GameCube to fail in the way it has done.

Even a killer game like Zelda desperately tried to push hardware sales but two weeks after its release the hardware sales went back to the low levels of March. Its desperation times for Nintendo as their shares are taking hits and profit margins are diving without a care.

There is no doubt in my mind. Nintendo are the God's of gaming. They however are NOT the God's of marketing and sales. The lack of software stock in shops in Europe, the lack of any marketing and the stubborn 'we have our fans' cries will no doubt summon the end of The Big N.

Yet where can I see them falling to from here? A place I never thought I'd see them. Nintendo won't leave gaming, if the worst games does really come to the worst they'll be brought out by a rival company. However that really is looking at death's door. I feel Nintendo will go the route of Sega, and move into software development only. I also feel that Sega could easily make a hardware comeback if they seriously planned everything to a tee. The GameBoy may be Nintendo's greatest asset, yet against the marketing strength of the vertically intergrated Sony I very much doubt Nintendo will 'bother' too much in competing strongly against it. Yes Nintendo will release another GameBoy but I fear the next will be the last 'great' one.

To be honest, I really couldn't care anymore. Gaming has taken a nose dive since the 16-bit era. Companies are developing for the idiots that walk the street thinking anything made by EA is going to be great. Microsoft have entered the market in a bid again to yet dominate another part of the world. I am personally looking forward to the Microsoft film studios opening up or when Microsoft actually buy the American whitehouse.

In Europe we have always been treated like dirt in the gaming world. What Nintendo didn't realise is that although we aren't the biggest gaming nation and we don't buy the most. We are probably the most significant to the effects elsewhere. Oh? I hear that Holland have sold out of Gamecubes and that Germany love the GameCube too. Yet thats like buying Old Kent Road when playing monopoly and thinking you've won.

Sadly. Although I hate to say it, its going to take a huge amount of balls from Nintendo to pull themselves up from this dying defeat. Balls which I don't think they have.

I'll miss you when your gone Big N.
I'll still have my memories.
Its your own fault you stupid idiots.

I think second place is fairly secure. While the Xbox has Halo 2, the GameCube has Metroid Prime 2. Project Gotham Racing 2 will be matched by F-Zero GX and the rest you mentioned (bar Counter Strike) are due out on GC also. That's not to mention Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Mario 128 and loads more that are guaranteed system sellers.

Well the cube isnt actually a cube at the moment anyway. I want an X shaped cube...

But N really do need to learn to market the cube. SP is on every bus shelter round here but who knows about the cube? Out of Joe Public anyway looking for birthday and christmas presents.

I played the PS2 version and then the Xbox one round a friend's house. Aswell as not noticing any significant changes, I also found the game poorly executed, uninspired and boring on both. I'm not against squad based games at all - Conflict: Desert Storm was great. But Ghost Recon was just poor.

Well the name of the console's kind of restrictive, don't you think? Actually it didn't stop them before hehehe. Might be a good USP actually - limited edition round GameCubes or something.

I think a more mature look AKA the SP would help wonders.

Ofcourse they care about the console, maybe not to the same extent as the Nintendo 64, where they were competing against the Playstation hoping they could beat it in sales (but we all know what happened there), but they still care. Miyamoto and his team of graduates of the "Miyamoto teaches gaming" classes have made some fantastic games which seem to me to be almost as many games in one year, as the N64 had Nintendo-made games in its entirity.

A re-design might be good, maybe with a few little extras (built-in Game Boy player, also plays DVDs, etc - like a tarted up Q) but I doubt a simple change of casing would be enough.

The Xbox has some big hitters coming out, a sonic game (woohoo)

Also due out on GameCube and Playstation 2.

, True Crime (which looks like it could better

Also coing to GameCube - looking very good at the moment too.

I would have thought sleep at that time of day would have been more important! Still if head-deflating's your thing at near 4 in the morning then go for it.

Listening to recent speeches and press conferences made by Satoru Iwata and all his cronies, both those options seem unlikely. Certainly the former - if Rare went for all those millions how much would Nintendo cost!? I bet Miyamoto is worth the same as Rare all by himself. Admittedly though the software-only line is an option...who'd have thought, 4 or 5 years ago, that SEGA would go the way they have. That was after two MAJOR flops - the Saturn and the Dreamcast. Although the N64 and GameCube haven't done as well as expected, they were/are hardly flops to the extent of SEGA's offerings. And besides I think that Nintendo have the financial muscle to ride anything that comes their way.

As you've already stated, it doesn't matter whether the next GameBoy is great or not because we're talking marketing skills here. I completely agree here - Nintendo will do jack against the PSP...and remember that Sony blew over a million Yen last year on an Anti-Mario Sunshine campaign. This is a perfect example of how the two companies differ. Watch and learn, Nintendo. YOU NEED TO COMPETE. It seems to me that Nintendo would rather lose money on poor sales that spend money on advertising, and that's just not cricket.

>To be honest, I really couldn't care anymore. Gaming has taken a nose dive since the 16-bit era.

True, so true...my Master System II and Mega Drive II almost bring me to tears sometime. Aah, Asterix...never leave me.

>Sadly. Although I hate to say it, its going to take a huge amount of balls from Nintendo to pull themselves up from this dying defeat. Balls which I don't think they have.

Nintendo are too damn proud, that's their problem. They're still living in the 16-bit Era where they were Gods and 1 in 3 households own a NES or something. Nintendo have a HUGE potential to punch a hole straight through the market. There must be a GameBoy of some kind within nearly every home in the UK, USA and Japan. We know they can do it, in those halcyon days when you could buy Mario T-Shirts from Marks n Spencers, and you got a free game pre-loaded into your console. Nintendo are sitting on their laurels and while the situation is nowhere near as grave as er-no might make out, this topic might ring true in 4 or 5 years time.

Whoop whoop

Hope that's constructive enough for you er-no :P Sorry about before. No hard feelings?

You obviously don't know me well enough then. I say what I want and feel. Pushing the very boundaries of humanities feeble existance.

Now excuse me while I concentrate on deflating my own head.

Ah-ha.

What I have done is create one of the best discussions in a few weeks (well to my knowledge) in this forum that I have read.

Reading excellent POV's from replies to the original post and seeing what you all think of my drastic but needed 'Goodbye Nintendo'.

You just cant predict what will happen with Nintendo. The N64 was looking in much worse shape at this time in its life compared to the GC. But somehow it stagered on and sold 30 millionish. Enough that Nintendo released the GC.

To be honest, I don't think N car about the GC. Really. Lets face it, N and Microsoft knew that the PS2 had won this round of the console wars. But they had to release something to try to build a fanbase. It will be the next gen that counts. The PS3 could be beaten.

In the meantime, perhaps N should redo the GC. After all they turned the GBA into the SP, same hardware different case, and some people are taking it more seriously. Even the black GC still looks kiddyish.

However its not all over. They do have a good few games and some really good ones at that, coming up for release. A good marketing push could help them.

And yes at the moment N are the number 2. However, I dont think that will last long. The Xbox has some big hitters coming out, Halo 2, PGR 2, a sonic game (woohoo), True Crime (which looks like it could better Vice City, which is also rumoured to be heading to Xbox next year). Oh and some wee game called Counter Strike or something like that.

But one thing is for certain, Nintendo will never die. At least not fully. worst comes to the worst they would be bought out, or if they ever did go bust then their franchises would be sold. How ironic if that did happen and Sega took over Mario.
