Ok, I fully expect to get slammed for this topic and feel free to, I can offer no defence except the following reason:

I bought the Destiny's Child album today, and it's fantastic.
Sorry.

If me buying the CD enables them to make more videos, then I have done a service for mankind.
And, the songs are excellent. "Bootylicious" - pure sex.

AND they can sing.
I heard them do accapella and they can cut it live with no production.

I like this CD a lot.

*gets out inlay card once more and nods*
Yep, they got it going ooooooooooooooon

This is how I had the music scene explained to me a little while ago, and it seems to make sense.

Remember when you were at school, and you were taught that all the colours of light, are made up of red, green and blue light? Well, imagine that red light is dance music, blue light is rock, and green light is rap.

Obviosuly rap is a broad term, and in that circle it owuld include stuff like R n B as well. Same for the rock circle, that would include indie etc.

Remember where you were shown the diagram where the three circles all overlapped, and merged into new colours? Well, that's the same with music. Where rock and rap overlap, you get this "Nu-metal" crap. Where dance and rap overlap, you get garage, etc etc.

Now. Where they all overlap, to form white light, is the "pop" stuff. The real mainstream stuff that gets played on the main radio stations, the stuff that gets in the charts.

But if you look at that diagram, you can see that there is such a large area of each genre that isn't represented in the mainstream section. There's so much more to each genre, thousands of bands and artists that you've probably never heard of.

That's a shame, as those bands probably do the "better" music. The more diverse, harder to get into kind of stuff. The stuff that really makes you sit up and think "Woah!", rather than the standard hear it droning on in the background type stuff that makes up the mainstream.

If you want to find out about less well known bands, it's easy, just go to somewhere like amazon.co.uk and have a browse, they have samples of each of the songs so you can listen to it before you decide to buy it. You never know, you might just find the best band you've ever heard...

I feel the need to point out the rap isn't a musical genre at all, mearly a style of presenting lyrics that can be used in many musical genres e.g. Hip Hop, R&B, hell, even Nu Metal.

But not all R&B is pop, not all Nu-Metal is pop and definetly not all rap is pop. In fact, most R&B isn't pop, most Nu-Metal isn't pop and most rap isn't pop.

May I hasard a guess that in your insular music listening you don't listen to these generes much? Therefore they only time you hear them is on Radio One/TOTP and such like? Of course that's pop, pop=popular music. Mass market medium like radio and TV aren't going to play unpopular stuff, are they? No, that would be silly.

Go stand in the corner and stop being so silly.

Au contraire my sneery compadre.
Looking at my CD collection, I can deliver the following albums (and none of these are made-up in an attempt to appear cool):

The Doors
Captain Beefheart
Nina Simone
Louis Prima
Tool
Clutch
Gorecki
Koko Taylor
Janis Joplin
Ike & Tina Turner greatest hits (ironic title)
The Eels
Destiny's Child
Aphex Twin
Iron Butterfly (In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is one of THE best songs)
DMX
Wu-Tang

etc etc, I like music that moves me. Makes me shake ma booty or think about stuff.

I just bought the album after hearing Bootylicious on the radio and seeing them do it live with no backing.

3 ladies with superb voices, songs about...well...getting "jiggy" with it and some tight backbeats.

Yup, they are acceptable to me.

Ye Gods and there's me thinking you were a bunch of white young/male/middle class things who only liked nu-metal/old metal/Radiohead whiney. Destiny's Child are brilliant as far as I'm concerned. The family tree extends from Tammy Terrell through to Gwen Guthrie and down to Destiny's Child. Oh did I forget Stephanie Mills and the Jackson Sister for anyone who might know/enjoy a reference to old skool r'n'b.
Loads of attituide, loads of style and not a hint of self indulgence.

I actually had the last Destiny's Child tape in my car for months. Good fun. No harm in that.

I'm going to stand up and say I LOVE POP MUSIC. Not all of it of course. It's mainly corporate pap. But there's loads of great dumb fun singalong pop songs and I hate people who are too up themselves and self-important to realise it. I love loads of obcscure and 'important' music but life is supposed to just be fun sometimes. The only music fans I hate more than those who are too 'cool' to listen to music outside their own narrow cliques, are the people who do like pop music, but only because they are being 'ironic'. I don't get it. Does that mean they actually like it or not? Do they even know? Scum.

I have to admit that I quite like Destinys child, they've made some good tunes, I don't usually like this sort of music but there's something about them that makes them standout from the other medioca pap.

If that's not enough, have you seen Biancee in the Survivor video in that little jungle number, DAMN.
