Yes I'm sure you could still go to parts of China and they might not have seen a caucasian before, or atleast the young ones. I'm sure the number of foreigners will increase each year, but that's suprising that you only saw 50 in 6 months.

I think in Japan you'll see a lot of foreigners especially in the cities. But of course there are many areas that don't get so many so you will find those old people who'll stare at you.

Perhaps they'll think you're an American from one of the army bases.

Don't ask me why but in my school it seemed like the more intelligent , more linguistic students had the option of Spanish while us "thickos" were left with French and German. >_< I guess we're limited by the number of teachers who speak the language. There are more French teachers than Italian or Japanese I guess :( supply and demand. They learnt French and German when they were in school afterall :/ But I really hope that changes and I hope they introduce other ways of making learning more interesting. 1/2 and hour listening to some of these audio lessons I think I would have learnt more French than I did over many months in those classes.

LOL I think you're right, but I must admit that's not always the case, I did see one program and the couple had been learning and spoke very well. It's nice to see that they get on well with their community probably far more so than they did in England. One of the reasons why people move I guess. So saying this Kawada I hope you take things seriously and really get into Japanese and Spanish, don't go there and "wing it". heh

lol that's a good motivator, learn the language or die. You really need to learn the language. Those British couple moving to another country without learning the language wouldnt have a chance in Japan, even worse if they don't know any of the customs, it would be a real culture shock I imagine. Get learning those 2000 kanji!!

I didn't really see that many as i was too busy at the University doing physical tests and meeting people and what not. They seemed friendly enough though at the restaurants and stuff i went to.

Yea, i mean even now when you compare it to other countries there really isn't many foreigners living there, i must have only seen about 50 tops in my 6 months there so i can only imagine what it was like about 20 years ago and before

Yes that's true, what was the reaction you got from the Japanese old people?

I've experienced that a bit when I was in Hong Kong but I bet things have changed a lot there since 95. Mainland china is getting more exposure to westerns now, mainly the cities I think. My exes friend went out there to work for awhile with her company, I think she did quite well but can't remember some of the stories she relayed over. Early 20ies girl I think she was. My dad got ltos of funny looks on the trains in China. But like Kawada said most probably the older generation. We're talking before 2000 I think.

Yea if they had like German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese etc that'd have been much better instead of just 2 choices (though some schools do have Spanish to) Surely there's enough colleges and Universities to like do partnerships and stuff to offer those courses

Yea my mom always watches those shows and it does annoy me alot when they just go over with the whole *ah well they'll speak English anyway* attitude. You just know as well they're the sort of people who sit in their home in England and moan about foreigners not speaking English when they live here

Yea i'm 21 so i'm at that cusp really i think, at least i have a motivation to learn Japanese as by February i won't have my translator so i'll either have had to learn the language or go lol

It just annoys me really, I mean you really should have a choice. I think if you know a language already you don't have to take up another one. Back then I hated French and didn't think I would ever use it. I don't know why but they just never made the lessons interesting. Maybe they should have took us all to france first to get us interested in wanting to learn the language. I don't think we learnt about any French culture or anything like that, just trying to feed up French phrases and words. Just not the way a language should be learnt.

You see them on the TV shows, I have no idea why but they never think of learning the language first before buying a house there and leaving England for good. If I'm going to retire in France or Spain, I'm going to make sure I can atleast order a drink. Hola and Merci arent going to get you very far.

LOL yeah I know what you mean, 26 and only spent a few years learning, what if I started when I was 12, (oh well I did start French at 11). I'd probably be fluent by now :D Or even when I was 20 I'd have a good grasp of Spanish or Japanese >_< that's why I'm not wasting anymore time and actually doing it.

Yea things are definitely changing, you can see the differences in the older people and the younger people for sure. The most obvious one being that the older people will look at you like you're up to something and with a look of disdain (i have a great picture of people on bikes and this one guy looking at me like i've just ran over his cat :D) whereas the younger people are far more friendly and will openly just start talking to you on the street. Can't really blame them though, it's how they were brought up and know no different.

That's terrible. It's not that bad in Singapore.

For anyone who doesnt know the reason why they probably favour males most is because the tradition was that the son would take care of the parents and the daughter would support her husband and his family. Of course it hasnt been like that in the west. Well maybe some countries and maybe a long time ago but I think this tradition is still in Chinese culture. But with each generation things change. I dont think the young generation will continue on with it. So things are changing in China.
