Shigeru Miyamoto is the today the video game equivalent of Mick Jagger. In other words: he is (like Yoshi) - a dinosaur.
Yes, his early games were works of genius, but since then he has produced virtually nothing but sequels and updates. His ideas dried up years ago. Mario 'this', Zelda 'that' - today he's just living off the back of his early originality.
Just what is he working on at the moment? I don't know, but let me take a wild guess: another Mario game perhaps? Another Zelda game? Jeez, change the bloody record! That rainbow world of silly characters has had its day. Move on man!
In ten years time what will he be doing? - I think we know the answer to that don't we?
At the moment we are seeing his old games being rehashed and re-packaged on the GBA and sold for 35 quid a pop. Am I the only person on the planet who thinks this is a rip-off?
To Miyamoto I say this : turn your obviously talented hand to something new, something fresh. Quit resurrecting exhausted ideas from the dust of yesterday's bones. Do something original like you used to. Cease the repetition of old visions. Stop the monotony!
I personally believe Miyamoto is a good programmer, he knows how to make a game enjoyable and fun. For me, he takes a genre and manages to harness all the fun aspects of it to set a bench-mark for others to follow. For example; Mario 64.
But for me, as far as original and innovative ideas go, then that accolade goes to Sega - or more specifically Sonic Team and Hitmaker.
Between them we've had titles such as; Samba De Amigo, Super Monkey Ball, Nights, Burning Rangers and Phantasy Star Online to name but a few.
Why didn't Miyamoto turn these 2 games into a serious tennis game, into a serious golf game - something that was badly needed on the N64.
He doesn't. He can't. Why? Because he's stuck in a rut.
> Miyamoto hasn't created so many new characters recently but in Gameplay terms he
> nearly always revolutionises...
Point well taken...
However, I take it you were replying to my post about nights and jet set etc?... in which I said the exact same thing! Mario 64 is hardly original in terms of the game ideas, however, as I said he did revolutionise the idea of 3d gaming, and has set a benchmark in gameplay in the 3rd dimension...
but as original as NiGHTS! Pah! Revolutionary, certainly... but absolutely every aspect of NiGHTS! was so original... whereas Mario's plot, characters and atmosphere were all the same as before!
(says the avid Sega fan, Logan)
I'd say that Pikmin and Luigi's Mansion are just as innoative, if not more than Jet Set Radio and NiGHTs.
Yeah, they're re using the characters a lot but the Gameplay is still very special.
Take Mario 64, and take Zelda.
These were games that just hadn't been done this way so well before and became instant hits.
Miyamoto is full of originality.
Let me guess you like Sony? am I right?
At this point in time I do not own a Sony console.
I never had a snes and I have tried to get a second hand one, so I was pleased to hear that I would be able to buy some of the great games that I missed out on and that they would be slightly enhanced versions.
> Ah, but it IS an excellent point.
Where's all the original games on the PS2?
