I'll keep this brief.

Shigeru Miyamoto is the today the video game equivalent of Mick Jagger. In other words: he is (like Yoshi) - a dinosaur.

Yes, his early games were works of genius, but since then he has produced virtually nothing but sequels and updates. His ideas dried up years ago. Mario 'this', Zelda 'that' - today he's just living off the back of his early originality.

Just what is he working on at the moment? I don't know, but let me take a wild guess: another Mario game perhaps? Another Zelda game? Jeez, change the bloody record! That rainbow world of silly characters has had its day. Move on man!

In ten years time what will he be doing? - I think we know the answer to that don't we?

At the moment we are seeing his old games being rehashed and re-packaged on the GBA and sold for 35 quid a pop. Am I the only person on the planet who thinks this is a rip-off?

To Miyamoto I say this : turn your obviously talented hand to something new, something fresh. Quit resurrecting exhausted ideas from the dust of yesterday's bones. Do something original like you used to. Cease the repetition of old visions. Stop the monotony!

Very true, but remember the team that made Jet Set Future have done it specifically for the Xbox. Not only that, but they've tried to squeeze as much power out of it as possible.

It is easy to upgrade a game from, say, a DC to a PS2, but far harder to downgrade.

Sega might send it over in one form or another.

I'm sure that the team behind it would've been impressed by the Cubes Cel Shading on Zelda.

I made Strafex up.

It's a name I intend to give a meaning.

I almost agree with Logan

(Although I wouldn't compare the stars to the keyholes in Mario World on the Snes - completely different, and the castle and painting idea is a fair bit more than the old level select in 3D...)

But it doesn't really matter.

Both companies make great games and both will be bringing them to the Gamecube.

Did miyamoto make Mario Tennis or golf? (I can never remember which of ninty's games were actually made by camelot ala Smash bros)...

Oh... And Miyamoto is NOT a programmer! He is, in fact an artist turned games designer/producer! He probably has less programming talent than me, and certainly doesn't code a single line fo his games!

But anyway... was Mario 64 original?
Well, I can safely say that both myself and Strafex (btw, where does that name come from?), agree that the story line is certainly not original...

But that's only one aspect of the game...

So, is the game original? Well, Strafex thinks (just justifiably) that the gameplay, and the whole structure of the game is original... and in fact back his views up very well... however, I must disagree...

The biggest concept in Mario is the way Miyamoto uses 3D to it's full potential. I would not despute that this is the most revolutionary thing to happen to games in the last few years. I do not, however, think it was as original as claimed. Noe only was the idea of 3D games not new (after all, many had been released for the psx), but many of the aspects of the game are simply ideas borrowed from old mario games (the stars hidden in the level are just like the keyholes in SNES mario, and the jumping into pictures is no different to walking round on the giant map in the SNES mario... it just looks much better!).

BUT, what Miyamot did was to perfect the use of these ideas in 3d in a way that had never been conceived. Before Mario64, all 3d games were just games that used 2d gameplay, with some depth to the levels... Mario 64 used true 3D gameplay.

Revolutionary... not as original as claimed...

But that's just my view... Strafex's view is also very true... it just depends on your view point

I know Mario is to Nintendo what Mickey Mouse is to Disney, but does Miyamoto have to use him and his chums in virtually every game he makes.
I ask you seriously: Where and when will it all end? - Certainly not with the GameCube.
Mario was at the height of his powers on the SNES. He clung on during the N64 years, but now it's time to step aside for new characters and fresh ideas. Likewise with Link and Zelda.

Why didn't Miyamoto turn these 2 games into a serious tennis
> game, into a serious golf game - something that was badly needed on the N64.
He

Ruined by Mario?

I think not.

The characters didn't affect the gameplay in anyway and using realistic characters would've sucked.

These two games wouldn't have been half as good if they were realistic.

Take Virtua Tennis, its a super realistic game but I rather play the more fun Mario Tennis with its over exadurated moves and speed.

If you're slating Nintendo games for not being realistic then you've seriously missed the point in gaming.

Point well taken...
However, I take it you were replying to my post about nights and jet set etc?... in which I said the exact same thing! Mario 64 is hardly original in terms of the game ideas,

Hang on. It is.
Take every single platformer before it.
Jumping across platforms and enemies to reach the end of the level.
Mario was the first to do it a different way.

The game is set in a castle. You get to a level by jumping into a painting. Ever seen that before.
It wasn't a simple A-B game with a few secret exits, there's a big level to explore, and you have to find the 7 stars in each one.

The more stars you get, the more doors open to you in the castle. And there's also plenty of secret stars to get as well.

It also had original ideas like grabbing the boss by the tail and throwing him onto his own bombs, the fact that your cap could get stolen, in one level, the water's level is decided at what height you go through the painting...

Come on, there's loads of originality there.

however, as I said he did revolutionise the idea of 3d gaming, and has set a benchmark in gameplay in the 3rd dimension...

but as original as NiGHTS! Pah!

Well I can't argue until I play NiGHTS, but if Mario isn't quite as original as NiGHTS, it's certainly close.

Revolutionary, certainly... but absolutely every aspect of NiGHTS! was so original... whereas Mario's plot, characters and atmosphere were all the same as before!

Alright. So Mario used the old "Peach captured by Bowser" storyline, but atleast everything else in the game was original.

And even if Mario 64 wasn't as original as NiGHTS, that doesn't rule out Miyamoto's other games.

Look at Pikmin for example...
