So you gain status by playing a season and then at the end of the season you move up or down in status depending on how you did?

... So I am more of a favourite or heel in the career mode when I begin one (withjim-hat).
It's good how, when you create a character (jim-hat) and play expeditions - the game saves your status to your profile so that it also effects your career even though the match may be completely unrelated. (I'm pretty sure this is what it's doing, as I had 0 popularity with jim-hat and it saves the wrestlers profiles after each match)
True. I think some of the problems mentioned about getting characters to be managers and challenging others wrestlers to fights are due to the lack crowd appeal/status/etc the wreslers people use have when they start off.
Like IGN said when you start of you have a low status and if you go to challenge HHH he won't be there because your character isn't worth the effort and is beneath HHH. Once you get further and get more status then HHH will pay attention to your challenges.

But still, it isn't exactly a major issue when the rest of the game (mostly) is greatness itself.

And it reflects how titles are sometimes won by wrestlers cheating. Obviously the fact that it comes up as disqualified is a bit off putting but when I used to watch wrestling people won by cheating all the time, and they still do.

I couldn't disagree with what has been said here more, to be honest. The package as a whole makes for the best wrestling experience in gaming. Sure there are a few bugs and such, but nothing that makes the game any less great than it is. The create a wrestler feature is the best in any game of any genre, and allows for some serious exploration.
I've had another thorough play today and it is, in my book, greater than WWF No Mercy, which is THE wrestling title. The DQ title changing is a bit shoddy, but means that you can't just keep retaining the title through cheating the system. I'd highly recommend this to people seeking an alternative to the highly over-rated Smackdown! series, and the pace of the game is slower and more strategical.
